The game is opaque and frustrating to play as both the Soviets and the Germans. I wish the game explained when to take which actions (does shelling for example increase enemy attrition?). I also wish the game told you that you can stockpile ammunition. The more recent Chinese game is much better, in my opinion.

DISCLAIMER
This game is hard!
Try to follow these good strategy lines to win your first game:
-Define reachable objectives
-Focus your efforts on a clear direction
-Stop attacking when your units are exhausted
-Don't send vast armies in areas where you can't supply them
The German did all these 4 mistakes, that is why they lost.
If you keep losing, you must be German, (that is the best explanation).
If so, act like a real german general : blame Hitler!
(not yourself, nor the game)
Have fun!
