About 30 minutes into Road 96, I paused and thought, what am I even playing? The controls and movement felt awkward, and I couldn’t quite make sense of what was happening. I was close to dropping it altogether. But I decided to give it another chance and started fresh. I’m glad I did. Before long, I had guided three teenagers across the border, and as their stories unfolded, the world and themes of Road 96 started to click. I found myself hooked. The game’s distinctive art style paints a bleak yet captivating world, and the narrative is carried forward by the many intriguing side characters you meet along the way. Choices feel meaningful, and during my playthrough, I was faced with the ultimate decision, a moment that stuck with me. In the end, I’m happy I stuck with it. Over roughly 10 hours, I experienced a striking world brought to life with gorgeous art and compelling characters. And of course, don’t forget to donate to the Stan and Mitch fund. “STAN AND MITCH AND...

A good story game that was made worse by its gimmick Overall, I enjoyed the game. The sense of wonder when you discover a new location or learn something new about the world and the characters, some decent humor, memorable characters and interactions with them And then they had to ruin it with the “all trips are unique” gimmick First of all, it might be technically true, but effectively a lie. Why? They have a certain set of scenes that get shuffled and given to you in a random order. Also, the main story scenes will always be in certain chapters, kinda ruining the “uniqueness” I started NG+ after I was done to see if I can do something differently, and… you simply can’t. No matter what you do or what choices you make, the game progresses in the same way. You choose to help someone? You’re helping them! You choose NOT to help someone? You are still helping them! And the uniqueness? Simply the order of the scenes. I maybe got two new encounters in NG+ There are mayb...

I guess it's personally not for me. It promises a fun "procedurally generated" road trip game, but 5 minutes in you can tell it actually focuses a lot on political commentary. This is not to say I dislike politics in video games, quite the opposite, it's just extremely shallow on its political commentary. Maybe it's better suited for younger audiences, but (i don't know how else to say this in a not-so-insulting way), it feels like a "baby's first Disco Elysium." It just feels so on the nose, which is exactly why it didn't work as well for me. The dialogue is written really weirdly, like the whole time I caught myself thinking "oh my god nobody talks like this, what??" Like for example, characters will talk to you and say some stuff like "Gosh, cops are corrupt! I hate those pigs! We must vote against fascism shaka brah!" The animations are a bit weird and wonky, the voice acting can be a bit stiff, but I can forgive all that if the writing was simply just better. If you're older than ...

The game should've delved more into the topics it presents, and the character writing is really not that good.

I bought it on sale, without realizing what I got myself into. It starts out kind of rough because nothing makes sense. But as you keep going, discovering secrets and building a deeper bond with the characters, you realize that this game has a heart. It's funny, sad, outrageous, beautiful, and charming.

TLDR: Great narrative potential that ultimately falls prey to platitudes, stereotypes, character inconsistencies, and strange plot lines for the sake of artificially fabricated drama. It pains me to give this game a thumbs down. Now, I'm not a big fan of the whole teen angle, but I get what the devs were trying to do and can appreciate it. That said, the first half of my playthrough felt like a breath of fresh air. Adventurous, exciting, intriguing, and as if the characters had some real depth to them. The second half? Well... here are some examples that raised my brows. (Beware: Spoilers below!) [spoiler] First, what the heck was that with Sonya suddenly caring about Lola? Her connection to Lola came out of absolutely nowhere. Seeing this snooty character (with seemingly no morals) breaking down crying over some (to her) random girl felt like the devs didn't know what to do. Made no sense to me. Also, the two motorbike freaks are her BROTHERS????! That bit was kinda fu...
