This is my first exposure to the Final Fantasy universe, and the characters and world were instantly charming. The story feels interesting and unique enough to stand out. As for the gameplay, the active combat system in FF7 Remake is really cool, smooth, and quite intuitive. Sadly, though, when it comes to gameplay, this is the one and only highlight. World traversal is boring and sterile, the puzzles are offensively trivial to the point of insulting the player’s intelligence, and the side quests are little more than generic fetch tasks with no remarkable story development. What makes me mad—yet still recommend the game—is the main story. The greatness is palpable. Unfortunately, while playing, I could feel how little respect the developers had for me as a player, artificially slowing the game down. It might take 45 hours to finish, but that doesn’t mean it’s 45 hours of engaging gameplay. +

User Reviews
This is a very strange game to review since I was a big fan of the original FF7. Ultimately I don't really know if I'll get around to playing the next game of the remake just because the first doesn't seem to respect my time. If you know the plot from the original, so much of this game seems to be additional random stuff instead of enhancing the original story. There are notable exceptions to this like Jessie's backstory but more often than not, it's just filler. And it's just so much filler. If you never played the original, you may just find that the game is right for you but the original FF7 was one of those RPGs where it seems like the first area is just a bit too long until you got to the meat of the game. This takes that intro and makes it even longer. The best analogy is: they're just feeding you appetizers and it's not sitting quite right.
Amazing remake of the classic. So much nostalgia, so many callbacks, and the new fight sequence is equal parts challenging & invigorating. It was odd to think I'd be spending 40+ hours in Midgar, but the depth of the story you dive into makes it fun and interesting the whole way through. Yes, some creative liberties were taken, but for the most part, it follows the storyline of the original, which is all I could ask for
the music, man… oh my god. even though I didn’t grow up playing the original game, its music still gives me this strong feeling of nostalgia. i’m sure there are still a lot of old games out there that deserve a remake like this one, because many of them have better stories and gameplay than most modern titles. also i love Aerith, she's a sweet and cheerful character.
Story-wise, it's not for me, not for my taste. It is trying too hard to be smart but lost its grip while doing so. Acting is too cringey, Turks are now all comedians. Even the gameplay can't help a story-heavy game like this. I'm done with the trilogy. I'm not playing the Yuffie DLC. I wont buy the sequels (I heard the issues are even worse). To be honest, I should have stopped early since Advent Children.
Lame ass game, impossible to progress, fighting sucks, combat sucks, did I mention combat is completely ass? Story drags on way too long with useless dialog.
Wonderful game clumsily remade. Poor gameplay decisions. Should have just fully committed to turn-based or real time action combat instead of this dinky hybrid system. *Slow animations for nearly everything (opening chests, breaking boxes, squeezing through crawlspace) *Camera fights you during every combat sequence, constantly hit by attacks you can't see *Many cutscene into cutscene moments where I'd rather have any kind of control *Most puzzles and level design are just tedium, hold button for lever *Braindead AI that makes me long for FF12 AI programming to return *Can't jump, can't fall down ledges, forced to use ladder in dumb situations, forced into long squeeze through corridor segments) I'm tempted to just watch the rest of the game on youtube because the story is pretty good.
FF7 Remake attempts the herculean task of trying to recreate the same nostalgia the original game did back in the 90s, with a coat paint of modern graphics, new combat system, and a few changes from the story here and there to keep even the people who played the original PS game at the edge of their seats. My review won't focus much on the story because I don't think it needs to. At this point you have already seen many youtube videos talk about it before playing this game. Gameplay wise, the new combat system is a big improvement from the more recent titles, like XIII and XV. The intended way to play the game is to press the normal attack button until you get enough ATB bar to do more complex actions. Of course, the game also gives you an option to do the whole attack spam automatically for you in case you prefer. While it's not technically turn based, you won't make out of it by just mashing buttons and hoping something good will happen. Also, please keep switching between e...
Incredible adventure game. I played the original when I was very young and didn't get very far, and I think Midgar felt much bigger and full of mystery in the 2D game. I was a bit disappointed to find out this isn't a 1:1 remake and the combat is not turn based. The combat is a very interesting system. I happen to love it, I love the way time slows down and you can see bullets flying past. But from a technical standpoint I can see people getting annoyed with it. Sometimes a boss will cause a AoE attack and I'll stand way back but the AI controlled team will wander into the AoE. They take reduced damage when the player isn't controlling them but I can see people getting annoyed with it. I didn't die once on my first playthrough on Normal difficulty, so I really did treat this as an interactive movie rather than a full on adventure game. It keeps you on a *very* short leash. Didn't like having to switch characters in the final chapters either, reslotting my best materia to the acti...
Having never played the original I can say 3 things for certain. 1, through the power of friendship and a giant sword you to can destroy.... Well everything. 2, dance battles are something I never thought I would want more of in my games. 3, evil guys need to be as hot as sephiroth or hotter in all future games.
