I got to play as a catgirl in this retro Mega Man / Kirby / Mario / Castlevania etc mashup, and managed to 100% it in about 18 hours. I'm satisfied.

I barely played it. Only just now reaching the first zone boss, and yeah, I love it. It reminds me a little bit of Mega Man and Ghouls and Ghosts when it comes to the powerups. It has a pretty decent challenge as well that does not seem unfair, rather, balanced.

Fallen Leaf is a comedic action platformer that intentionally evokes the graphical and musical style of late-era NES games while keeping modern sensibilities in mind. What is evident almost immediately about Fallen Leaf is how it looks and sounds. Its pixel art is very good; it intentionally limits some colors on its characters to make them look more authentic to NES sprite art, and even with that limitation, sprites are expressive, vibrant, and pack a lot of detail. The graphics are not completely beholden to NES-style limitations; there isn't any sprite flicker, and there is some sprite rotation, etc. However, this game's pixel art looks good in a way a lot of "retraux" pixel art does not. The music is also very good, avoiding the pitfalls that can occur when trying to emulate 8-bit and 16-bit console music. Again, the music sounds like it could have come from a hidden gem on the NES itself. While the plot of the game can be somewhat thin, the game goes for a corny, goofball mood m...

Wonderful platformer that hit all my favorite marks. It has complex attributes, but is easy to play. The music and visuals deliver exactly what you'd want. People complained about the level repetition, but I didn't see it. Maybe if I played for hours and hours straight, but for me each level brought something different with the music and layouts. I'd even go out of my way to play levels you could map-walk around, and go back to ones I had missed. My only gripe with the game is that the platforming for some of the characters could be a bit tighter and the story is nonsensical. The platforming could be a skill issue, and the story isn't really a big deal. Other than that though, no complaints. I had a lot of fun playing and beating the game.

This game had been sitting in my Steam library for months, and for some reason it called out to me as next out of my backlog. I'm so glad it did. Fallen Leaf is a creative, smooth-controlling, level-based platformer in pixel art style. It is NOT a Metroidvania; if anything, it acts like a pre-SotN Castlevania game, with short levels, a mostly linear game structure, and story moments peppered throughout. Its main unique mechanic (relative to other games in the genre) is the ability to switch between a large cast of characters on the fly at any time with the shoulder buttons. It's clear the developers took this mechanic very seriously, because it's well done and the characters are well-tuned in comparison to one another. Any level can be beaten with any character, but their abilities vary enough that levels will be easier or harder, or require different approaches, depending on who you play as. You'll find some favorites, I'm sure, but you'll also experiment and switch around a bit -- ...

This game does so many things well, it's hard to find anything it does WRONG. The art is unique and delightful in almost every circumstance. The aesthetic within the art is a fresh retro-charm with muted color palettes. The gameplay is basic run and gun Mega Man style with very short and cohesive checkpoint sections. There are tons of extras to find, a big map to move around in, NPCs to speak to and help, and, more than anything else, a sense of love and passion in almost every aspect of the game's design. So far my only real critique would be that the game is too easy--even in sections where I've died, it was almost entirely for endurance reasons. Bosses are trivially simple, which leads me to believe this might be a great first platformer for kids, or for someone else who's new to the genre. It's my hope the difficulty will increase in later levels. Great game, and highly recommended.

What do you get when you combine Mega Man style levels with almost a dozen different characters along with a tongue in cheek story? This game. If this tag line makes you interested, you'll probably enjoy this game. However, there are some issues with this game that make it incredibly frustrating at times. Luckily, this game doesn't contain any egregious design flaws, just some movement mechanics that needed more time in the oven. The main issue is dropped inputs. This game doesn't have any cayote time in it. This simply means that as soon as your character leaves a platform, you lose the ability to jump, which means you're going to often times attempt to make precise jump, and simply fall off an edge because you timed your jump wrong. On top of this, there is no animation cancelling, and it's often difficult to determine when an animation has been completed. So, you're going to try to jump and attack, or attack and jump, to deal with enemies and incoming attacks, but your ...
