About the Game

Tactics Ogre, crown jewel of the tactical role-playing genre, is reborn!

Based on the 2010 release, the game features improved graphics and sound, as well as updated game design, bringing to life a new Tactics Ogre that remains true to its roots. Tactics Ogre veterans will experience a game that surpasses their fondest memories, while players new to Tactics Ogre will discover a game unlike any they've ever played. Reborn and deeper than ever, the game enables players to immerse themselves in the world and intrigue of Tactics Ogre like never before.

The Valerian Isles, jewels of the Obero Sea. Long a center of naval commerce, the people of the isles struggled throughout history for dominion over her shores.

Finally there rose a man to put an end to this conflict: Dorgalua Oberyth. But history would know him as the "Dynast-King." King Dorgalua strove to stamp out the hatred among the people of the isles, and for fully half a century, Valeria knew prosperity.

Yet upon the king's death, civil war erupted anew as three factions vied for control: the Bakram, who comprised much of Valeria's nobility; the Galgastani, whose people made up the majority of the isles' population; and the Walister, who numbered but few.

The isles were soon divided between the Bakram and Galgastani, and an uneasy peace settled across the land. Yet none believed the calm would last...

  • Your choices affect how the story unfolds, and even how it ends, with a game system that allows for multiple paths through the game and multiple endings. The story takes place through the eyes of a young man named Denam. The decisions he makes will alter the fate of those around him, and shift the course of Valeria's history.

  • Fight pitched tactical battles on three-dimensional battlefields. The completely revamped AI enables enemies to adapt their tactics to the situation, providing a battle system that always keeps you thinking and never grows old.

  • The class-wide level management system used in Tactics Ogre (2010) has changed to a unit-by-unit level system. Theorycraft your way through endless combinations of classes, equipment, skills, and magic.

  • Enjoy numerous playability improvements, such as a quicker pace of battle, auto save, and a complete overhaul to the controls and UI to make it easier to get into the game than ever.

  • The unparalleled details of the characters and backgrounds from the original Tactics Ogre (1995) have been recreated in high definition, while the detailed pixel art that gives the game its unique feel has been preserved and enhanced.

  • The cutscenes are fully voiced in English and Japanese, and all of the music has been rerecorded with live performances! The voices bring new life to the complex motivations of the characters that make up the factions and shifting political alliances of this epic story.

  • When you advance far enough in the game you'll unlock the World Tarot, enabling you to travel back in the story with the power of your forces intact; an incredibly useful feature in a game where your choices have such a huge impact on how the story unfolds. If you wonder what a different choice would have led to, now you can find out!

  • Traveling back isn't limited to the story; the Chariot Tarot lets you rewind up to a certain number of moves during battle. In a game of tactical battles where a single mistake can mean the difference between victory and defeat, you can play without worrying that you'll back yourself into a corner.

  • Enjoy a wealth of endgame content such as the 100-level Palace of the Dead. A world of endless stories and intrigue awaits!

coming from later FFT games, this format where your team has many more characters in it feels a lot less fun; the more characters you have in your team, the less impactful they and their turns are. simple as. It ruins the chess element of it a little bit. Other than that its a well-made game.

Why a thumbs down? simple the level cap mechanic; It is so poorly thought and and garbage, it does nothing but hinder the experience. It is very likely, for example, that you reach level cap on the first fight of a multi-fight dungeon, every subsequent room just giving you... actually nothing, if you dont beat the bonus objectives/manage to collect loot dropped by enemies (if even that). Its made worse by the UI actively showing you how much EXP you would have gained had you not been at level cap. And I've been informed that this issue gets WORSE in post game content, where enemies will keep getting stronger way past your level cap. This one mechanic absolutely ruins what would have been an amazing game otherwise. Well, that and the sprites, the sprites just absolutely do not match the tone and feel the game is going for.

I was on the fence about buying Tactics Ogre for a while, but finally decided I wanted to try it, and I'm glad I did! I've had a good time with it; I'm doing a deathless run and it's not as impossible as I thought it would be. That said, it's definitely a hard game. Battles feel like I'm going in for 30-90 minute puzzle that will take all my brainpower. It's not exactly relaxing, but it's satisfying when I win. I wish I'd found the infinite money glitch sooner, that will significantly increase my enjoyment of the game. The story is good, the voice acting is excellent, and the character images are so pretty! My monkey brain likes collecting all the recruitable characters. I like that it has so much content, I've been wanting a game that I can sink lots of hours into. I just hope my TRPG skills are good enough for the post game! One note, a lot of people have complained about the buff/debuff card system. I can see why the devs might have done it...if they hadn't, I think I w...

I’ll be the first to admit that Tactics Ogre: Reborn is not a game for everyone - but for those willing to commit, it honestly offers one of the richest tactical RPG experiences out there.

At its core, TO:R is a tactical/strategy take on the JRPG formula, set against a backdrop of high fantasy and political intrigue. You command up to 12 units on an isometric battlefield, manually deciding every movement, attack, and ability. Battles can be long, repetitive and demanding, with loads of filler encounters sometimes padding progression between key story moments. It’s a grindy game, ,and unapologetically so. While most modern titles clock in a 30-40 hours, Tactics Ogre can easily demand 150-200 hours, especially if you aim for BiS gear and deep dives into the myriad of endgame dungeons/content that the game has to offer. Beneath this demanding gameplay, however, lies one of the most compelling stories in the genre. This is a tale of civil war, betrayal and ideology, where th...

This game does not respect your time at all. You'll spend 15-20 minutes in a battle clearing half of the enemy units until you realise you entered the battle with the wrong party composition and suffer a drawn out death while trying to salvage the battle. Thankfully FFT: War of the Lions is releasing on steam.

Tactics Ogre Reborn is a great game with a gripping political story where you take up arms to decide the fate of several cultures in the Valerian isles. Denam and his comrades fight oppression from every corner to give the Walister people a chance to live freely, but at what cost? The tactical gameplay layer is very good. I never played the original, but it does a good job of giving the player options throughout the game and letting them go crazy. Unique characters are strong, but are not necessarily stronger than the generic options that you start with; they are just new tools in the toolkit. It is overall quite fun to play with 8-12 units and struggle through conflicts with your squad. I am impressed at the available options through the branching paths. Each chapter takes the characters down vastly different paths, depending on key choices at the end of chapters. And from there small choices within those chapters can result in life or death for many. I accidentally took the Law pat...

It's an okay game. The pacing is all over the place. At one moment you plow through enemies, then suddenly you hit a brick wall. You decide to grind levels a bit, but the level limit makes this approach useless. Until you HAVE to start grinding for recruits and exp/skills. Endgame is mostly a gauntlet of 150 battles against mostly same enemies over mostly same environment. Otherwise it a good port of a rather old remaster of a very old tactical game. It works very well on the Deck, it's easy to pick up and play. It plays well in 2025.
