About This Game

The Games in Canada. People all around the world have spent months, years and, in the case of the athletes themselves, lifetimes preparing for this momentous event. And now you can be a part of the excitement yourself.

Originally created in 1988, this game brought the excitement of the Winter Games to MSDOS computers.

Created by the masters of sports simulation, Epyx, this game contains 7 winter events to chase the Gold in:

 • Luge
 • Figure Skating
 • Speed Skating
 • Downhill Skiing
 • Slalom
 • Ski Jump
 • Cross Country

No matter which events you choose to compete in, one thing is certain: it's going to take great practice, patience and plain old hard work to go for the Gold.

But you can do it. And what's more, you're going to have a great time trying!
Fun, but not as good as the C64 version
I had the Commodore 64 version of both Winter and Summer Games growing up. Flawed, unintuitive, but still addicting and fun. Probably had a huge impact on my love of the Olympic Games. This version lacks some of the complexity of the C64 events, such as no Heart Rate monitor on the Cross Country. Lacks some events, DOS sound always seems to lose to the likes of the C64 and the Amiga. But you know what? Still nostalgic fun. Worth normal price sure, but a sale would be the best time to get it. What I would love is to collect together all from the events across all the versions of the original Epyx titles, refine them, present them in some nicer pixel graphics, Amiga quality sound, and some proper tutorials. Because honestly these titles are still some of the most fun Olympic Sport games. Yes, there are many better titles, but these are charming, and offer a lot of events across all the versions. Don't expect too much, but still a...

It pains me give this game a thumbs down as I loved the old Epyx 1984 Summer Games which I use to play on my Commodore 128 for hours each week. There was also Winter Games in 1984 followed by Summer Games II in 1985 by Epyx. Then The Games: Winter Edition and The Games: Summer edition were released in 1988 which I actually never played during that time. So, I was excited to try The Games: Winter Edition on Steam. I loved the retro memories of the graphics and sounds, however I was disappointed that there were no instructions. I did find the instructions for a joystick on the C64 wiki website which was somewhat helpful but had to figure out which arrow keys etc, corresponded to the commands. In the end it was just not worth the bother thus the reason for the thumbs down, but thanks for the memories of the Summer Games, which I will buy if it is released.
