About This Game

Outpost engineer is a first person factory automation game set on an extra-terrestrial volcanic island.

Modify the terrain, plop down miners, lay out conveyor belts, build structures, plan your factory.

Background

It is the year 2546.

You will be sent to a newly discovered oceanic planet through a one-directional wormhole.

Your task is to set up a research base, establish communication to earth, and finally, open a stable wormhole portal so we can prepare the planet for colonization.

  • Atmosphere: Breathable earth-like atmosphere.
  • Target Outpost Location: Isolated volcanic island.
  • Life indicators: Sparse plant-like vegetation.
  • Environmental Threats: None known as of date.
  • Goals: Catalogue life forms and local resources. Establish R&D Outpost. Communicate Research.

Features

  • Building: The terrain is fully destructible. Structures can be built from concrete, wood, metal and rock resources wherever you like.
  • Factory Automation: Automate mining and production. Distribute electricity. Layout conveyor belts to provide resources for your factory machines.
  • Research: Every resource can be analyzed. Your findings will be communicated back to earth, in exchange for new blueprint unlocks.
  • Technology: Every 3d asset in the game is voxel-based. The terrain and all 3d models are rendered smoothly using marching cubes (no blocks).

There are several issues with this game, one of which caused me to refund. First is that this should be priced at half of what it is. There are comparable games out there at that price. Second is that you can't save on demand, only through it's autosave. This would be fine except that it doesn't save correctly, in fact it completely lost my first world. But the deal breaker is that VSync doesn't work correctly, after a few seconds it starts to strobe and makes me nauseous. The load and new game creation times are also a little excessive. I am refunding this for now, I'll check back in a few months to see if they've fixed these issues, especially the VSync since that makes the game unplayable at the time.

Update: it's been about 5 months since the last update, with no word from the developer. Don't buy this unfinished, overpriced product. [strike] Although this game has some serious issues in its current state (particularly in the areas of sound design and user friendliness), it's quite solid for being in Early Access. As games of this genre go, this one isn't particularly original (many of its elements are drawn from other games, most notably FortressCraft: Evolved), but it does have its own character, so to speak. The rewards of automation are immediate and deeply satisfying, and the core gameplay loop is somewhat grindy (at least in the earlygame) but not repetitive. Is this game worth the $20 price tag? As it is right now, I would say no, unless you've already played the other major titles of the genre (Factorio, Satisfactory, etc.) and are looking for a fresh experience. However, its future looks very promising, so if you're a fan of automation games, be sure to keep this one on...

Enjoying the game so far. It has the same addictive, time-consuming ingredient as Satisfactory (but being early access it doesn't have that polish of Satisfactory, understandably). The environment is immersive, too. You're presented with small "simple looking" tasks to craft something, or automate something. Each of these is a mini-challenge and take a bit of time - not a little, but not too much. So, like the carrot before the donkey, you just have to do that "one more thing." Satisfaction comes from setting up any sort of automation at all (an automated drill, or a furnace that takes mined ore and produces ingot bars), so that you don't have to go manually mining or crafting it any more. The game is definitely "early" early access. Very playable, but will see much love by the dev, I'm sure. It can only get better! If you like your games finished and super polished, you may feel cheated. But if you have that Satisfactory/Factorio/DSP itchy spot, this game will scratch it a ...

I really want to enjoy this game but it just has so many issues I can't recommend it at this time. Most of the issues I can deal with because it's still EA. Claws not taking off the conveyor randomly or they'll only take from inventory and not the one on the belt from an assembler, texture issues, clipping, etc...all those I can deal with. My issue with this game is I can only play for maybe 60 min chunks plus the lack of manual saving. After a certain point the game performance just tanks and I get maybe 2 fps where i have to wait for the menu to show up, exit out, and wait an eternity for the files to actually save. There may be a memory leak or something because I can't run it for extended sessions and I have a ton of other resource hog games that run just fine (plus all the VR games). I'm extremely lenient when it comes to EA titles and I'll put up with a lot but the time it takes to exit and come back in when performance tanks is just not worth it.

For the current moment game is not very playable (at least with minimal req) It is hungry for RAM to the point where Chrome can be jelaous. During world exploration amount of used memory grows and grows to the point of game freezing (Task manager here I come...) Also in my opinion it's overpriced, buy Evospace instead. In normal conditions I'm big fan of factory games but for this one it is better to wait and see where will it go.

I really liked this game. It's in the same vein as SatisFactory or Factorio, but with a specific twist / blend. It may not be at the same scale as those other games, but it scratches my brain just right.
