Rise of the Triad: Ludicrous Edition is the best way to experience this game. That being said I really don't think you should buy this game unless you are a fan of 90's shooters. There is a reason why this game almost never gets mentioned in the same sentence with the classics like Blood, Duke 3D, Quake, Doom, Shadow Warrior, Hexen etc. This game was and is mostly bad. It has some good ideas but they feel unrealized, In this review I will try to break down why this game is a black sheep of 90's shooters. It is not all negative, the game has 3 chapters + one new added for this edition. 1st chapter - The Hunt Begins is a solid chapter and serves like a good intro for the rest of the game. Solid level design, shorter than other chapters but overall good. 2nd chapter - Dark War is just awful. Bad levels design, Really, some of the worst levels in any shooter. Even if you use the map it is still confusing and not in a good way. Skip this chapter. 3rd chapter - Extreme Rott is one of the bes...

They’ll bury you in a lunchbox!
of course we like rise of the triad, without it there would be no new blood !
A fun retro FPS with a great soundtrack and an interesting concept. Though to be frank, I understand how someone can dislike this game. Some of the level design is straight up atrocious and a few powerups (specifically the shrooms and the elastic ball) are more of a hindrance than help. But if you´re willing to put up with that, aand you like retro shooters, I recommend this one.
It's really fun, but you can see alot of really outdated and shitty level design.
As a remake, this is solid. It plays the same as I remember from 25-ish years ago, but on modern hardware and some modern QoL. There's basic stuff like proper mouse look, auto-run, and crosshairs, but also configurable options to do stuff like reduce some enemy health. The gameplay altering ones can be turned off. As a game, it's a bit on the weird side. At its best you're running through expansive maps blasting enemies into chunks with a wide variety of explosive weapons. At its worst you're holding down left click for a damn minute waiting for the triad enforcers to just die already. The really cool weapons all have limited ammo, but the basic pistol and machine pistol have infinite ammo. The problem is that in most situations you can't find enough ammo to explode every enemy, no matter how perfect your aim or how well you ration your shots and backtrack to pick up a bazooka you couldn't hold. The bullet weapons are also massively overpowered - most enemies can be trivially stunlock...
I saw the video[s] by Civvie 11 and bought this game in a heartbeat! I have been wanting to play this game for YEARS, but until now there hasn't been a reliable or consistent way to experience it without digging up the original game and a Windows 98 / XP computer from the 2000s. If you haven't played it yet and you are interested, this game blows all the janky source ports out of the water and is a MUST.
"Eat lead! Here, catch!"
I can see this being an absolutely awesome rerelease for someone who played these games way back in the day, but as a newcomer this game is, sadly, incredibly confusing and boring. Can't blame the game entirely, as it's based on very primitive tech, but still. I really wanted to enjoy this game, but no matter what I just couldn't find a way to. At least it's better than the 2013 remake.
