Toad On Fire

Toad on Fire is a top-down, arcade-style shooter that draws inspiration from a smattering of classic titles. Despite a couple minor instances of jank, there's a lot here to love: it's fast-paced, loaded with power-ups and secrets, and the core mechanics feel good and *fun* in a very wholesome, classical way. You control a toad with a flamethrower as you progress through levels wiping out enemies, opening locked doors, and destroying the vast majority of the landscape along the way. The shooting feels good, with a well-implemented strafe mechanic and a delightful move where you use a charged shot to blast yourself at enemies in the form of a flaming green ball. The sound is crunchy, explosions are satisfying and numerous, and the pace is consistent and well-measured. I had a few minor gripes during my playthrough: some levels seemed to contain no music for some reason, and it was unclear to me if this was an intentional design decision or not. Really fun game overall, well worth the price for a little game Really needs some way of telling the player in game how to dash though, because a good chunk of time was spent getting through the crushing diamond sky level without it >< Me and my friend only found out how to dash after completing the game and reading the manual on the steam page, which I feel is not intuitive in the slightest All in all though a nice shoot em up that was a blast to go through! (Also first dashless runs? lol) (For future you dash by charging your weapon and then firing while charged >>)
