Winter Wastelands

I love this game - easily a 10/10 (I am now part of the winter wastelands community)

[i] My Experience [/i] It looked like developer Michael Haapasaari had put quite a bit of work into this game, so I wanted to check out the finished product. I like taking a chance from time to time on these little indie adventures. The MS Paint aesthetic wasn't particularly appealing, visually, but I certainly haven't played any other games that look like this. Unfortunately, the game just didn't feel good to play, and the combat feels especially unsatisfying. It's difficult to tell the range of your attacks, which can cause you to get too close to these enemies that damage you simply for touching them. You can often hit enemies with your attacks when you appear to be out of range. There's also a strange energy/reload meter situation (that is poorly explained) up in the right corner of your screen. I soured on the experience even before leaving the starting snow area and requested a refund.

Winter Wastelands caught my eye because of its cool title, sci-fi setting, character design, and retro graphics. I was originally planning to wait for a sale to pick it up, but this is one of those rare times when I don't regret buying a game at full price. This game has had a lot of care and attention to detail put into it. I respect the effort that was put into the world building and level design. Post-launch, an Easy Mode option was patched in. That shows that the developer wants everyone to have the opportunity to have a good time and experience Winter Wastelands, even those lacking the skill or patience to complete the game on Normal. The gameplay itself reminds me heavily of a specific type of custom, player-built game in Starcraft or Warcraft 3, and that's a good thing. The genres MOBA, Tower Defense, Bounds, Auto Battlers, and Imposter-finders all find their roots in Starcraft's custom games. Maybe this is unknowingly part of its own genre too? I'll coin the term "Lite RPG"...
