About This Game

Make friends, cast spells, and uncover secrets in your magical small town! Will you preserve the forest or let the town grow?

New Witch in Town is a 750,000-word interactive YA fantasy novel by Grace Card. It's entirely text-based, without graphics or sound effects, and fueled by the vast, unstoppable power of your imagination.

When you were a kid, you lived with your grandmother in the small town of Silvertree, on the edge of a magical forest. Grandma is a witch, and she taught you how to use your magic to affect the natural world, too. “Magic is a part of you,” she always told you. “Learning how to use it means figuring out who you are.”

Now you’re 19 and on your own. After years of living in the forest while you perfected your witchcraft, you’ve returned to take care of your grandmother’s house and crow-familiar while she’s gone. Figuring out who you are feels more important than ever - not to mention, figuring out what Silvertree is. A lot is just as you remembered: the friendly generous next-door neighbors with a kid just your age, the proud town council, the quaint little shops with quirky punny names, the gentle shadowy forest full of magic.

But now it feels run-down, with potholes in the streets and overgrown empty lots where stores used to be. A big real-estate developer promises to help the town by expanding into the forest. What’s the best thing for the people of Silvertree and for the magical forest? What mysteries wait to be uncovered in the town archives? And more importantly, where did your grandmother go? Why do you keep having strange dreams?

And how did a tree grow overnight right in the middle of Main Street? Is it possible that you’re not the only new witch in town?

  • Play as male, female, or non-binary; gay, straight, bi, pan, or aromantic
  • Choose your familiar - a dog, cat, or owl - and bond with her, then go on to pet every single animal in town
  • Find love with an earnest dreamy history major, a tattooed stranger with a not-so-secret soft spot for animals, an adventurous aspiring journalist, or your old friend the kid next door
  • Become a good citizen of your new town, or break every rule on the books
  • Heal old family wounds by bringing together parents, grandparents, and children
  • Keep your magic a secret, or use it everywhere you go
  • Make your voice heard in local politics: speak up at a town council meeting, join a protest, write in to the local newspaper, or bring Silvertree’s history to light
  • Advocate to preserve the forest, or make way for progress and new houses so that Silvertree can grow
Friendship is magic, and so are you!

I love CoG stuff and this is one of only a handful I just couldn't finish. Its cardinal sin is being boring. There are several ROs but they have so little personality that I couldn't keep track of which ones were which. You're presented with stupid choices, such as the 2nd night when you go to a party and are presented with the option to go hang out with one of the ROs, or to go question a guy who knows something about the big mystery at the heart of the plot and the reason you came to town in the first place. He knows almost nothing but apparently learning that he doesn't know much takes the ENTIRE evening so there's no option to go talk to the RO or anything. Then there are stupid mysteries that get introduced, like there's an attempted theft at a fair and you start getting options like "Try to find out more about the robbers" and I am like, nah fam I wanna investigate the *reason I am here.* The MC is incredibly passive, you just kind of float from one thing to another as the NPCs...

A game that is ostensibly about being a witch but is actually a very dull story about environmental conservation. You think you're going to be spending your time casting spells but it's mostly talking to people you have no interest in. It's also another COG where your character has one personality with very little variety.

First time for me to request a refund outside of the Vampire Bloodlines 2 disaster. This game isn't atrociously badly written or anything, in fact the author has a way with words generally speaking, the problem is nothing about this is fun. There isn't even a story, really, just a lot of confusing, disheveled scenes connected in a very mechanical way that doesn't do anything but create a timeline of sorts. Other than happening in a certain sequence it's often hard to find a connection between the things happening in the story. There is no real mystery, at least none that can be explored, let alone resolved, in any way. The characters are hard to tell apart from each other, even the romance options, a lot of things they do and say only serve to give exposition to the player or to move the plot forward without the player being, technically spoken, forced to act a certain way. It's more that the player is mostly a fully passive, by large silent, person in the background of scenes that m...

It's mid. You play as a witch, but don't really do much witching stuff—the equivalent of a Movie starring The Rock where Dwayne 'the Rock' Johnson is actually a goddamn side character, truly unacceptable. The characters have very little presence in the story to the point where—believe me when I say—that my grandma unironically has more presence than half of the cast, and she's already DEAD, this is mainly because you don't get to interact with them often and will instead spend most of your time saving the forest you *care* so much about. Conclusion: Go play Super Star Soccer Striker instead

It's rare from me that I don't recommend a game or take effort to write a review about it. But it's hard not to feel butthurt, since it was such a promising story going by the description. I hate to admit, but this is the most dull COG I've ever played. I kept losing attention and track, the characters barely have any personality including the MC and it all just blends into a massive blob of confused storytelling. I felt like I was just floating around in nothingness the whole time. It had so much potential, the concept sounded great, but execution is not the best to say the least.

This game was extremely boring to play. I completed the story, all the way through, but most of the time i found myself skipping through multiple paragraphs of text at a time. And the main plot line isn't even all that interesting. One thing I think should be an option is to just focus on the characters instead of having to worry about the forest and what not, as that was what I wanted to do at the start of the game. Why have your choices matter with characters if the characters hardly contribute? Anyway, would not recommend this game to anyone in the near future. However, the support shown to other gender options and non-biased sexuality's is both noticed and appreciated, as that's rare for a game to have.

New Witch in Town is a game I have had my eye on for quite awhile. It's release date, from memory, kept being pushed for a fair amount of time and this usually says alot about how a game will turn out. Compared to many other games yet to be released this story had no presence on the COG forum, it had a demo and an illusive release date. That was all anyone knew about this I imagine, so when I finally got to read this - my impressions were from the demo and from the name and I think that this is the first and by far the biggest pitfall the game has. As I read through, I was curious as to when I would get to the story of magic and witches and maintained that curiosity up till the end, as it is never really about the magic and witches. The story is in actuality focused, whether intended by the author or not, on the new and old relationships the MC faces as they return back to the town they had spent their childhood in and it's forest. And that's it. I think the threads are there for mor...

unfortunately, i don't really like this. i had this wishlisted before it even released and had my eye on it for a fair amount of time, very excited to play! so i was sad to buy this and not like it. the game feels like it punishes me for wanting to explore the world and talk to people. the options for dialogue are okay i guess, but a lot of them seem really shallow and don't change much. and some options seem formulaic for each interaction, in the sense that there's always options where you focus solely on certain objectives and it's Very Obvious which each dialogue is for. for example, in this game, you try to save the forest and the town. and there are always generic dialogue options that go to either extreme: "but what about saving the forest?" or "ehhh, who cares about the forest, what about the town?". and these options come at the cost of building your character's personality or their relationships with others. this game doesn't give you enough time to explore the world and get t...

The romance options all feel like the same character. I hate that none of them are established characters, that I choose their gender, that they´re all around the same age etc... Yeaaaah.. Not worth it

I was initially very excited about playing this game, however it ended up being a disappointment. There's not much plot progression and it seems to be left at a point for a sequel - yet it fails to grab you enough to desire that sequel. There's a number of characters that can be friends/ROs, yet I struggled to know who was who and there is no "character index" to check who I'm actually talking to. This makes it difficult to get attached to most of the characters. There's a few mysteries in the game, some of which are abruptly solved by overhearing an argument in the epilogue. Other mysteries remain unsolved, and I'm unsure how much of that is due to my choices or due to the open end for a potential sequel. I'd hoped for more from the familiar, but I felt like the bond was more "feed the cat that can teleport" and less magical friend. Overall, I went into this thinking I would enjoy it, but it seemed more of a chore with no real outcome.
