I've bought all of Eggcode's previous games but I'm refunding this one. What they're doing is too simple, generic, and limited and other people are simply doing it better. You can't play and enjoy this game once you've played Software Inc. It's like comparing Mario 64 to Pitfall. Pitfall was good enough in its day, but once you've gone past, you simply cannot go back, and that's how it is with MGT2. These Eggcode games also do not age well. I tried to go back and play Mad Tower Tycoon, a game I enjoyed well enough when it was first released, but after playing Project Highrise (a game not without its own serious faults) I just couldn't go back. To be honest, even Yoot Tower aged better than Mad Tower Tycoon... but I digress. MGT2 is just way too simple, by the numbers, and generic to be enjoyable in 2025 when better options are available. I enjoyed the original for what it was, when it was released, but Software Inc hadn't fully hit its stride yet. This equally generic sequel do...
The gameplay Loop for this game is legit. The cycle of making a game, releasing it, learning from it's success or failure, then starting again is insanely good and satisfying. On top of that, there is so much variety of ways to go about managing a company! Quality over quantity? Sure. Quantity over quality? Also sure! Want to make a game engine company? You can do that! Want to make your own console? Go for it! It is seriously an awesome game. If you are interested in managing a game company, look no further than this one!
Loved Game Dev Tycoon? You’ll love this. Buy it!
As a big fan of tycoon and management sims, I was hesitant for a long time about buying this one, especially since I thought the first one was very mid-to-bad. Having said that and now sunk 20+ hours into it, I think this is now my favourite video game tycoon game by a good stretch.
