About This Game

Good Mourning – Linear Narrative Redefined

Good Mourning tells a compelling story about rejoice and regrets, redemption and letting go. It’s a tale about good and bad, self-reflection, choices and chances, all the ups and downs of ordinary life, but through a filter of fantasy.

Good Mourning is a narrative game with high emphasis on replayability. The main storyline consists of hand-crafted elements, which are randomized for every playthrough. The goal is to generate emergent narrative through gameplay, which evolves alongside with the actual story.

Following in the footsteps of critically acclaimed Lydia, Good Mourning doesn’t shy away from serious themes, but at the same time it’s also a warm-hearted take on the little things that make everyday life worth living.

Just as important as the story itself, is the way it’s presented. Good Mourning is a run-based visual novel, which builds upon playthroughs. Different outcomes portray the story from very different perspectives, which will affect the way the narrative is interpreted. The ultimate ending is covered in the shrouds of mystery, and it’s up to the player to uncover all the facets of the story. During the course of the game the story can evolve to unexpected directions.

The structure of Good Mourning is all about breaking the form. Traditional linear narrative is a poor fit for a digital game, for games revolve around choices and interactivity. And as software products games offer a possibility for randomly generated content. This is impossible for other mediums, such as literature and film. We see these factors as possibilities rather than restrictions, and we want to explore how deep this rabbit hole actually is.

Gameplay

 • Good Mourning combines visual novels into a collection of mini games.
 • Emphasis is on a story and players are encouraged to experience it through several playthroughs.
 • The story adapts to the choices players make, and portions of it are randomly selected to ensure replay value.
 • Replayability is also a key element in the story, as well as the ability to choose and how other people perceive you. Choosing differently has an impact on the story and how it is interpreted.
 • The interpretation of the story is where the emergent narrative comes to play: the player sees only segments of the storyline, and the bigger picture has to be formed through imagination.

Even though it's still in early access, it's been very enjoyable so far. Would recommend if you like choice based 2D games. My main criticism is that the trailer does not reflect the gameplay at this point, but it was fun nonetheless and I hope that it gets even better when it is done. Soundtrack and art are both really nice, did not encounter many bugs even running on a compatibility layer on Linux.

After I played Platonic Partnership's first game "Lydia", which affected me deeply, I immediately sought out their other games. When I saw that "Good Mourning" was available, I bought it and played it immediately. "Good Mourning" hit closer to home for me, but I don’t think I enjoyed it quite as much as "Lydia"; however, they are completely different. The story is really interesting, accompanied by an amazing atmosphere, art style and soundtrack. The game as a whole, especially the ending, really affected me, and "Good Mourning" has a lot to say about life as a whole, the decisions we make along the way, and the regrets we have afterwards. I saw a lot of myself in the main character, and unfortunately, that’s not entirely a good thing. I will definitely be replaying this soon, because I didn’t experience everything. -- 9.5/10 -- The reason I give it a 9.5 instead of a 10 is because the game is repetitive, however, the repetition is purposeful & part of the narrative’s point...
Good Mourning: A Narrative Game Redefining Linearity
"Good Mourning" weaves a compelling tale of rejoicing and regret, redemption and release. It's a narrative that explores the duality of life, self-reflection, choices, and opportunities, all within the framework of fantasy. This narrative-driven game places a strong emphasis on replayability. While its main storyline consists of handcrafted elements, they are randomized for each playthrough. The goal is to create an emergent narrative through gameplay, evolving alongside the core story. In the spirit of the critically acclaimed "Lydia," "Good Mourning" tackles weighty themes while celebrating the small joys of everyday life. However, it approaches these themes with warmth and empathy. The presentation of the story is as crucial as the narrative itself. "Good Mourning" is a run-based visual novel, evolving with each playthrough. Different outcomes offer distinct perspectives, shaping the interpretation of the narrative...

If you don't mind deterministic view of life as inescapable shi*hole full of crap people, it's very interesting game about piecing together picture of main character's life from small, well narrated vignettes. With strong sense of style and a bit of nonlinearity. It's just... almost unbearably depressing and skeptical.

An okay story which doesn't benefit from its format. Good Mourning is a tale about emotional baggage and regrets underneath a moody "slice of life". It isn't pretentious at all, however, the few "lessons" that were supposed to make me reflect landed as pretty obvious or not well explored. I didn't get to empathize that much with any of the characters and the dialogues were barely interesting. As a "run-based story game", it didn't work for me. You get to replay most of the interactions, but you can't know for sure whether it's going to be the same (or samey) dialogue or you're going to miss content if you skip. Once you engage, you have to stay for the whole conversation. That could have been solved with a skip option. There's a "choose your own adventure" element here but you don't get to change anything in the grand scheme of things. The first few minutes prior to the start screen already anticipate this. You just watch how slightly different choices would make others react slight...

I am convinced this game is better than anything a million monkeys would get done given infinite time.

I certainly hope this thing will soon come out of early access, because i, not gonna lie, can see the potential there. Devs try to make walking-and-talking sim something better and broader: distinct toxic visual, trippy music, lot of interesting scenes (just need to fix all glitches and typos) w8 for release
