About This Game

Shields of Loyalty is a turn-based dark fantasy strategy game. It is set in a thematic 2D world inspired by a legacy of genre classics, enriched with great features and modern gameplay. Experience challenging TBS action with high replayability value on the island world of Mantaria as you lead your army victoriously from battle to battle!

Customize Your Army

Command one of three unique avatars, each offering distinct skills and auras to shape your strategy:

 • Aglovan the Noble: A foreboding cavalry commander who excels at leading swift and powerful attacks. Use his commanding presence to rally a diverse army of unit types and classes, leveraging his aura to dominate the battlefield.

 • Warlord Karnoth: A barbarian leader with a focus on brute strength and tactical dominance. Command his army of strong infantry and flight units to crush your enemies with overwhelming force.

 • Sargon I: A spellcasting commander who empowers magic-driven armies. His presence strengthens allied sorcery while reducing incoming magical damage, supported by a faction of desert mystics and powerful units.

Train your units, transforming them into stronger and more powerful soldiers. Collect artifacts to further enhance your forces and unlock specialized abilities. Activate these abilities wisely to overcome the unholy brood and achieve victory!

Experience Tactical Depth

Utilize each avatar’s and hero's distinct auras to gain the upper hand in battle. Free the "heroes of the old wars" and harness their power and auras to your advantage!

 • Form strategically advantageous formations across the terrain to master challenges and overcome obstacles.

 •  Gather units into larger squads to fight against powerful enemies and withstand the onslaught of evil.

Explore Diverse Biomes

Face the undead army across several dynamic areas:

 • Darkwoods: Begin your campaign in a biome covered by forests, swamps, and rocky landscapes.

 • Eternal Ice: Push forward into a snowy tundra full of lethal traps.

 • Lava Desert:  Enter a scorching landscape where molten ground and environmental hazards offer fresh tactical opportunities and new enemies.

Navigate Environmental Effects

Survive randomly generated environmental effects such as lightning strikes, storms, or meteorites. These events do not distinguish between friend or foe and will strike either army without mercy!

Replayability

On your way to free the island world of Mantaria, make decisions that unlock certain levels and block others. Enter the battle again and again to experience all of the challenges!

The main idea behind the game is certainly not without appeal. A spiritual successor of the original Fantasy General. But the game comes with too many flaws, which heavily impact on its chore gameplay. A lot of these issues come from a lack of common sense. For instance browsing units before buying them, you can only see their raw stats, but leaves you clueless about the active abiities - if any - of the units. If you then click on a chest at the bottom right corner of the screen, then, you can check the inventory of the units, with the almost same UI as before, on top of it, you'll know if the unit has a physical or magical attack. So basically, instead going all the way to the bottom right corner of the screen to click on a chest, it could have been the one and only UI from the get go. It's common sense, but the game is riddled by stuff like that. Your summon enter a town, then it gets an artifact, the artifact will disappear after the mission: because the summon is not a...

I just cant recommend a game that is lacking so much information. If you look at any unit in the army management screens pre-battle, or even by clicking on them during the battle, there doesnt seem to be any way to see if the units have any traits. I initially thought none of the units had traits and were all just slightly different variations of 8 stats. When i booted up a map i could indeed see things like the drummer has an ability to buff an ally. But things like my armoured knight having something called "shield wall" but nothing indicating what that does, or who provides it, or anything was available. The game is either super shallow with no traits or abilities on any units (ie a spearman, horseman and archer are all identical exccept having different numbers), or it plays super shallow as theres no way to get the information on what each of the units can do via the UI. You cant release this as a version 1.0 and expect it to get a good reception....
5/10
Hex-based turn-based strategy game that gives me Fantasy Wars vibes or Battle for Wesnoth vibes. Towns feel kinda like old school HoMM towns. Visually, it's a complete disaster. Can't tell who is enemy or ally. Units blend into the background. Boring murky monochromatic graphics. Text is terrible. Despite that, the combat & music are rather decent. So I'm a bit torn... I'm pretty sure I'll keep the game but good god do I wish it was easier to look at. EDIT: game freezes very frequently, about 15% of turns, making the game take even longer than it already does. Between the bugs and lack of difficulty options and lack of UI options, the game feels like EA. See here for more issues I noticed: https://steamcommunity.com/app/1318240/discussions/0/529855456375480874/
Pros:
- Voice acting & music seem pretty good - Units look pretty cool (or they *would* if they didn't blend into the background so much) - Combat is rather enjoyable and you can customize...

In the current state, this game is not worth buying. It is bugged, with many times the game stopping after some action. The latest patch is supposed to have solved some of these isses but I still ran into them. You are given no information about what your units can do, what the stuff on the ground does, how the combat values get computed. Offense is generally way stronger than defense. I still haven't figured out why sometimes archers don't provide off/def-ensive fire. Units are totally unbalanced. Play with an all-vezir army, you'll be 3 times stronger than anything else. In comparison, a druid is pretty useless, a drum a complete waste of money, and even infantry don't compare to a vezir. Some effects are just annoying, like the AoE fear effect, which can force your units to move into places, sometimes uncovering treasures or triggering effects you wanted to trigger by another unit. This also causes bugs, like turns not ending. Also lightning and storm that randomly hit the batt...

I'll keep playing it... but first impressions are not good. I've lost the tutorial by placing my hero and then right clicking.... LOL Remove =/= Kill Mechanics seem a little convoluted Lack of different sounds when units are attacking I have not seen any progression related to the base itself in this part of the tutorial... we will see. If there is not, it will be disappointing. It feels like the game it's still in early access.

It should, and hopefully will be, a great successor to Fantasy General. I tried this game a couple of years ago in Early Access and played it for 17 hours, so it wasn't bad, for EA. However, on starting up a new game today, after the full release, it has game freezing bugs. My game locked up midway through the second battle right after lightning stuck at the end of my turn. I am giving it a positive review in the hopes that the Devs will keep quickly fixing the bugs and to counter act some or the recent negative reviews, so the game doesn't get buried before it even has a chance. If fixed soon, it should be a really fun game like Fantasy General. Fingers crossed. I'll give it another try after the next update or two.

Great and challenging game, which is nice to see these days. Game still has some issues and limitations (low resolution, chokepoint mission bug), but DEVs seem already be working on them. Hope to see more updates and even DLCs in the near future.

Very promising fantasy strategy that the developers are clearly keen to polish up and improve upon; responding quickly to bug reports and feedback... Seems decent for the price, looking forward to getting into the thick of it now the Chokepoint mission is fixed :)

Cost of everything from Mercenaries (waste of funds for one map use) time it takes to get XP and up grades and then the cost to purchase new more powerful units vs the enemies that seem to have ranged and air units that easily take down your units before they can attack or counter = game you lose interest in quickly (losing units = lost experience and the cost to replace is too great. Would like more variety of starting avatars, doubt that would make the game enjoyable. Cost, time and effort with lack of choices and no ability to grind makes me think that they only want you to use 4-5 units per map to gain enough xp to level up before you get to the 4th map, Beastman avatars skills are not worth much his Whirlwind only hits 2-3 cells and the whole only able to heal/replenish troops after you have a town/camp while each map after the first you have to take a town/camp gets old quickly. Chokepoint map show a ranger unit pinned to a stump, map shows him as a unit but no clarification on ...
