About This Game

Wartorn is a single-player, squad-based, roguelite where players play as Yara and Elani, sisters who have been driven from their home and must traverse the wartorn Isles of Talaur to reach the safety of Beynun, their ancestral fortress. Harness the elements in fierce real-time battles while upgrading a crew of fantasy creatures as you search for your family.

Systemic Elemental System

Wartorn features a systemic, emergent gameplay system using the elements of fire, water, tar, plant, and lightning. Strategically choose your squads to master the elements and environment against hordes of enemies. Water extinguishes fire, tar amplifies fire, electricity crackles across the ranks in wet conditions, and water can heal plant-based units. And that’s just scratching the surface!

Squad-based Combat

Build out your Caravan by recruiting squads of fantasy creatures including goblins, elves, demons, treefolk, (and more!) as you travel the world. Each squad adds new strategic options to your caravan through their different characteristics and unique abilities. Mix and match what squads you bring into battle to truly master a run. Battlefield positioning, squad combos, and skillful usage of abilities can win the day, but be careful, losses cost you morale, and if your caravan loses hope it’s game over.

Strategic Replayability

The game’s blend of strategic and roguelite elements offer deep replayability, with each run feeling fresh thanks to emergent gameplay, dynamic squad management, and unpredictable narrative events that can save your struggling band or cost them their lives.

Locating your lost Family

Search the Isles of Talaur to meet Yara and Elani’s family, who reveal pieces of the game’s story and  grant the player heirlooms that bring with them new advantages and abilities for future runs.

Explore the Overworld Map

Explore the Overworld Map, which shows off the massive scale of your journey. With branching paths and unexpected outcomes, every choice leads to new challenges. Be sure to monitor your hope, your food, and take care of your squads!

They just don't shut up. On and on and on with the whiny dialog. It feels endless. Playing this makes me feel the life leaving my body. The time spent being subjected to it comes with a distinct feeling of the moments of age accumulating. It's like having to listen to the song Baby Shark on repeat over and over and over, only less pleasant. Perhaps the worst part of it, even more so than the irritating voice actors, is how bad the writing is. I'll give you an example, it's from just the first few minutes of the game so it's not really a spoiler. Your home town, with high stone walls and a thick wooden gate with a sturdy crossbar, is under attack by "scores" of enemies. A "score" is 20. So let's say two score, or 40ish enemies. The two main characters, your starting party, decide to unbar the thick gate by themselves and run out to fight the scores of enemies. In what way is that even remotely rational? It's not even marginally sane, nobody would be so stupid. Especially when the alter...

(I've got about 10 or so hours so far on my girlfriend's account!) I've had a ton of fun playing Wartorn so far. The bones here are so strong it's impossible not to see this game's potential, even this early into it's life cycle. Art is beautiful, the story, characters, and VO are all great and break up the gameplay nicely, and even though I feel progression is a bit too slow, I've had a lot of fun getting closer and closer to the endgame. Please go support this game, it deserves it!

Idea behind the game is nice : there are very few RTT based roguelites and I am happy to see 1 more. Unfortunately, there is a reason why RTTs aren't as numerous as other genres: pathfinding and object/unit collision are difficult to do properly. And Wartorn doesn't do it properly. At least not yet. In spite of that, core of the game is good : fun & challenging fights, enough randomness to make each run distinct from the previous one. My verdict : I cautiously recommend Wartorn, but depending on how game develops, I might have to change my review to negative if developers don't fix pathfinding and collision issues. Those are not something you can ignore in an RTT.

I'll preface this review by saying that while this game is buggy and is in need of some tough love, I really have been enjoying it. Overall Wartorn is a fun take on the very scarce RTS Roguelike sub genre. I appreciate what it is trying to do, however there are a few glaring issues I have with the game. Firstly there is a game breaking bug where the encounter with the avatar of justice will not trigger and the caravan will just pass the tile and will no longer receive encounters or be able to interact with shops or mercenary guilds. The only way to fix this is to abandon the run and restart. Secondly i do wish the battles were a little bit bigger. Only having 5 squads available and one being locked to the sister duo makes the battles feel very small scale. Combined with the maps all being very small, tight spaced, and not a lot of variety, most of the time battles just turn into jumbles of troops smashed into each other and either being stuck on other troops or by ter...

Fantastic RTS gameplay reminiscent of starcraft with a journeying mechanic just like a tabletop RPG board game - 10/10
