I have been playing Civilization since black and white Civ I on my mac classic. For me, the franchise peaked at Civ 4 - that was the last game where it felt like you were actually building a civilization and creating an empire. Firaxis launched "Civ revolutions" as a casual version of Civ, and Civ 5 and 6 moved the game in that direction - from a 4x game towards more of a tactical war game with city building. This wasn't the worst, and these games still maintained some Civ elements; however, it attracted a player-base that wanted to play a multi-player tactical war game, not a squishy, expansive civilization building game. Civ 7 is the game where multi-player war-gamer players finally took over the game design. I loved the feel of Civ 7 at first, it is beautiful, and feels much more like an old-school Civ game than 5 or 6. But then I hit the first wall - I couldn't build more than 4 cities? That seems kind of arbitrary - why make an explicit limit instead of a mechanic that discoura...

User Reviews
I tried to like this game like I've loved past Civ titles, but it just isn't good. Ages have been revamped and it's the core problem. You change nation and lose units upon age transition. It's a soft reset. Why does that matter? You no longer get the joy of units fighting way outside of their intended age. Gone are the days of archers fighting guns. You lose attachment to your civ because it isn't your civ, it's just who you are now and you know it's not who you will be latter. You cannot build tall. It's not possible because your upgrades need to be built over and expansion can only come from multiple cities. That list is not exhaustive it's just what I can come up with at the moment. Ages are also not the only problem. Religion has been dulled and reduced to it's most basic boring form. Culture is not something you build through the ages it's something you rush in the last hundred turns. The only victory condition which remains uneffected is science and even it just felt worse ...
Draconian game. Locks you out even if you're not using WeMod or other game mods on this game - which, to be clear, SHOULD NOT MATTER in the least. You paid for the game, you must be able to decide how you want to play it since you're playing single-player anyway. I have all the Civ Games, including their DLCs. Guess who's never buying a Civ game again?
I've been hooked on Civilization since I first played Civ II on a Mac in the late 90s. There have been versions I liked more and ones that didn't excite me quite so much. But thousands and thousands of hours of gameplay over nearly three decades convinced me that this is a quality game series that would always deliver. Then I bought Civ VII and discovered that even a golden goose can lay a steaming turd. DO NOT BUY THIS TURD.
I regretted pre-ordering, but did not even post a negative review at that time. I thought I'd give them the time to work on the product as they said they would. So far, I've heard it's better, but I'm still seeing the ''console UI on PC'' vibes, which is absolutely horrible to play on PC. This was an even bigger slap in the face, as I never pre-order games. I loved Civ 6 so I gave them a chance. What made me decide to post this negative review however, is the attitude I'm seeing from Firaxis/2K. I know press releases are also for investors, but I am still their customer. I do not think their recent press release is an acceptable response to CIV 7's launch. Launching a special edition is also laughable when your product is still not up to par. So this is why they are now receiving a negative review from me. Who knows when they'll get their game to an acceptable stage. Maybe I'll be back to update my review at that time.
This game is good. I really like the whole series, have done since CIVII. A lot of the problems of those games are fixed: PROS -Combat is now fun. Less micromanaging, no keeping around units forever simply because they were experienced. Now experience runs with the general, and the army does too, unpacking and repacking as you want. Why didn't we always do it this way? -There are unique tech tracks (culture) for your chosen civilisation. To me, they feel more unique than they've ever before. -Urban building areas are great - you can build two things in an urban space, and overbuild old and inefficient buildings from previous ages. This means that cities remain at least a little compact, with space for farms and so forth. -The towns system is a big step forward. Have a sprawling empire without the micromanagement. Just great. -For the first time ever, civ looks good from a distance. -Each age has its own goals, and I think they change a bit game by game. More replayability! CONS -I do...
God am I glad I bought this game and then immediately refunded it. This company is so greedy due to the success of the last game, which I really enjoyed but when this game came out it was not optimized and the gameplay and trees are terribly designed. Overall -10/10. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND.
Splitting the game into three disjointed sections was a bad idea. It's like playing three boring games.
I've brought and played all Civilization games from the very First one - Man you guys screwed the pooch on this one. If I wanted to play Humankind - I'd play Humankind. DISGUSTED! First game and stops straight after the exploration age. Pretty graphics to the point of pointlessness - the first game had better gameplay than this. The army leader is not really helpful at all - and exploration age seemed just getting treasure ships home - BORING! Diplomacy - YAWN! This is suppose to be a game that gets me in trouble with my significant other and have me running late for work - JUST ONE MORE TURN - you guys lost the best addictive mechanic - its like beer without alcohol - YUCK! Why would I do it to myself! Maybe I can just pull up my Sid Meiers Railway tycoon and think back on better times.
Incomplete game with over priced DLC that should have been part of the game to begin with.
