The Short Version:
A fast-paced parkour action game that focuses on jumping and dashing whilst shooting at enemies with a bow and arrow. Sound interesting to you? Then allow me to introduce you to Adverse. A short but intense indie experience made by one developer, Adverse isn't without its issues, but nevertheless, it’s a fun and interesting idea that's executed rather well. Both in concept and in actuality, it succeeds at being a standout indie game that’s well worth the time and investment. While the bugs do get in the way sometimes, behind those technical hiccups is an entertaining and captivating experience. Oh god if I realized sooner that this is made by the same lunatic that made Inertia and Exertus I would have never purchased it. To give you an idea of how truly awful it is, it took the developer two prior games to at least stop using the default UE4 texture on every single wall in the game and actually start adding some... very basic artwork. The movement and gameplay are still atrocious anyway though. - Floaty, wonky, slow, annoying movement. - You dash in the direction of your current movement, not where you look at or try to move towards. This is just awful and irredeemable. Like, if you jump over a pit and get hit by an enemy and nearly stop in the air, trying to dash forward and not fall down would propel you in a random direction of current near-zero velocity. How could you possibly screw this up so bad? - You can choose to shoot enemies... Or not to. No lives, no health, just skip enemies, no matter if you get hit. Actually walking into their shots from the righ...
Well the day has finally come, launch day! I've been helping out playtesting this game for a while now and It's great to see how far it has come since the very first day I got my hands on it. The game has quite a lot of levels, that being 40 levels across 8 worlds. The later worlds are usually longer and pretty tough mind you! So it's welcoming to have a sort of challenge that gets progressively harder as you get further into the game. Furthermore the worlds has a very neat addition of interconnection between them. At the last level of the Pure world, you will start seeing trees and woodlands, leading up to the next Woodlands world. And the same for the end of Woodlands where you see a castle in the distance, etc. It's a tiny thing but it really enhances the game experience! It's not perfect though, with a few bugs and polishing needed here and there, but the game at large is pretty complete and well made. Though nothing that will hinder your gameplay or maybe even get noticed unless...
ADVERSE is a chill shooter platformer that will give you motion sickness, and it feels 'unfinished'. At first I was skeptical and wasn't sure how to feel about this game, but upon reaching the " Village " part, I honestly felt the regret of buying this game. First of all, I don't expect much from an indie developer who put their time and effort into making a game, supposedly polishing it and then releasing it on steam, but this wasn't the game I thought it would be. Pros: + the visuals are ok and kinda nice. + the atmosphere is excellent. you get that heavenly vibe while playing it. Cons: - it's too BRIGHT. even if you turn off the bloom, you're still gonna go blind. it also makes you not able to read texts. - the tutorial is rather vague. - the "sliding" feature is totally useless. you won'e be needing it anywhere in the game. - the "dashing" ability is unbelievably extreme. once you hit E, you'll be sent to the other side of the world. - the level design isn't enjoyable. you can s...
It starts off as a chilly fun fps platformer. However the game gets way too hard (often unfair) way too quickly and then isn't fun at all. Rather the game then tries to be as annoying as possible. At this point it's really just trial and error. Very "fun" to die over and over in a level having to replay it from the beginning because there are no checkpoints in a level. Also the game is lacking polish. I know this is an indie game but a platformer needs to control precise which this one doesn't. You barely have control while jumping. There is a slide mechanic which is borderline useless. Ladders are kinda buggy. Hitting a target with the bow is often almost impossible as the speed of the arrow is so damn slow, enemies are often moving, are far away and you are constantly moving.
Super chill game, non-violent shooter with emphasis on speed of completion. Controls could be more responsive, collisions could be better placed, but the game is fine as it is.
This looks and feels great, I randomly came across it a long time ago and I have had it on my wishlist since. This is definitely a game you can get really good at. I gotta say, I enjoy styling on the enemies with my 360s. Music is great too, very relaxing id say. Worth your cash people!
You get rewarded with more points for hitting shots from farther away. However, it only takes into consideration your position when your shot hits an enemy, not where you fired it from. It doesnt matter if you fired from a kilometer away. If you are close when the arrow finally connects with the enemy, you get no bonus points. Who decided to do it like this?
Quick Description: -Adverse is first person shooter platformer w/ a sleek, clean, and atmospheric aesthetic. Unfortunately, Adverse is dragged down down greatly by it's fundamental movement and jumping mechanics. The only part of my short 85 minute experience that I enjoyed was the visuals, which is quite a shame. What's Good: -The visuals! This one is obvious to anyone that watched the trailer; this game looks great. Most of the settings are very peaceful, tranquil platforming sections w/ lots of straight lines and modern architecture. I really love the way this game looks, which was the main selling point for me when I purchased it. -The soundtrack and sound design are very simple, but they work well w/ the overall tone of the game. Most of the background music is calming and easy going, and the sound effects are mostly minimal sounds, which I think were good choices. -It's tough to be too upset by any game that is $6 brand new and frequently goes on sale. I think I paid $3 f...
Challenging! I love challenging. This game is just what I've been looking for. A game to practise your skill at platforming and shooting targets that are NOT other life forms. The controls seem to work well and I appreciate, as always, the option to change the key bindings for individual preference. While you do get a better score for being fast, there's nothing stopping you working your way through each level at your own pace. This makes it a more relaxing experience if that's how you'd rather play. Though it can still be frustrating when you keep falling off, until you get good at it. Practise and patience makes perfect. If you like a good challenge, this game covers that well. All in all, I really like it for what it is. 9/10
