I have been gaming for almost 60 years. Since a map and counters game of the American Civil War came out in Life magazine in 1963. I still respect the Avalon Hill titles I played years ago and many of the strategy and war games from the 80s and 90s were gems. Grigsby, Sid Meir, Tolan, and the other giants made history immersive and interactive. I say this only to put in context my belief that this developer and game belong in a modern showcase of top tier achievement and continuing presence. The game is solid, mechanics through graphics. It says authenticity without descending into counting MREs in the truck. The improvements and refinements are consistent, apt and excellent. It's also the biggest bargain in its niche for at least 10 years.

One of the best WW2 turn based game. But, be ready for a long grinding game where opposing units do not give up ground easily.

Hex of Steel is in a class of its own, in this genre of game. HOS is by far the best playing most balanced war game of this type that this ole grognard has ever played. HOS has that ONE MORE TURN feel i used to have for Civilization games. The units can rank up with exp making them more deadly an tougher than units with no combat exp. Game play happens as you think it should naturally. If that unit of anti tank catches a wounded tank on the battle field its bye bye tank, but if the un wounded tank catches them first in the open, they are gonna retreat an most likey be whipped out! With the way this game designer has made HOS, if a really tough unit at half its normal Hit points is attacked by a full strength medium unit its going to take more damage because of not being at full health. I love this mechanic as wounded units are advisable sent to a position behind the lines to heal an gas an ammo up! HOS is just a blast to play simple enough for a casual war gamer, complex enou...

Hex of Steel is one of those games that seems so simple and that is true for the core of the game. I hopped into the D-Day campaign without reading the manual (my usual bad habit) and found the German counterattacks much tougher to contain than I expected. This game isn't bound by history but I still found myself fighting hex by hex always afraid that the enemy would break through my lines and disrupt supply. I have played Unity of Command2's version of this battle many times and while I like that game, I slowly realized this version is better. The bottom line is the game is fun and at no point did I feel like the game was cheating. As I learned the game's mechanics, I liked the as It felt like the game's developers put a lot of time into balance. For the price, you can't beat Hex of Steel. I've finished one scenario and plan to do anther soon. I suspect most wargaming fans will feel the same.

It's pretty good. There are some elements I have had trouble understanding; like manpower and how the command points work, but overall I am enjoying my play-through against AI on normal mode. The developer is diligent; updating and adding quality of life fixes frequently and regularly.
