As a chess player, this looked interesting, but I can't recommend it. It's basically just chess, but the pieces have boring abilities, their movement is unchanged. Board readability is terrible, all the pieces (both yours and your opponent's) look too similar and so everything blends together until you can't figure out what is happening anymore. There's no tutorial, and the AI you can play against is terrible, if you're decent at chess you will easily crush it.

What can be created?
You can create units and customize their name, movement patterns, portrait, power level and abilities. Abilities are created in-game and allows you to create both passive and active abilities. Passive abilities triggers automatically based on its conditions/requirements. Active abilities are triggered by the player and on its own turn. Abilities may trigger status effects on units, referred to as tags in the following section.Effects
| Stunned | Units with this tag can not move. |
| Frozen | Units with this tag can not move. |
| AttackImmunity | Units with this tag can not be affected by physical damage (overtaken). |
| MagicImmunity | Units with this tag can not be affected by abilities. |
| Detonate | Destroy the unit and damage the surrounding units. |
| Poisoned | Unit with this tag will be destroyed when the counter reaches zero. |
| Charging | Unit with this tag can not move and display a visual charging effect. |
| Fatigue | Unit with this tag will be destroyed when the counter reaches zero. Can not be removed or modified by abilities. |
| Ice Ram | Smash through blocking frozen units and/or ice obstacles (sliding units only). |
| Transform | Irreversibly transforms a unit into another unit type. |
| Blind | Units with this tag can only move with a distance of 1 tile until the counter reaches zero. |
Attributes
Other than the fixed tags listed above, you can create your own effects using free-text for units to give them unique behavior. For example, adding the attributes "Elf" and "Bow" can allow you to target units that are bow wielding elves. Since this is free-text you can extend the game with your own personal touch or faction specific flavor to your units.Win conditions
You can create custom win conditions, currently following a chess style format, such as:- Capture the king: Take out the opponent king to win.
- Four Pawns To Victory: Take out 4 or more opponent pawns to win.
- Rush: Get your opponent down to 10 units or less to win.
Other
One of the biggest issues with current card battlers is that you have to spend a lot of money to stay competitive by frequently purchasing new packs and cards. We believe in a model that is free/included once you own the game and so, all future packs containing new official cards, decks and game rules will be available to you at no additional cost. In the future we hope to make it easy to share user generated content within the game so that you always have new and exciting decks to try out. In future versions, and only if needed, we might introduce purchasable cosmetics to cover our maintenance costs.Screenshots
User Reviews
After having played this game extensively since I acquired it, I am posting this review in the hopes of addressing the points made in the negative review above, as the reviewer clearly does not understand the purpose of this game. This is going to be somewhat lengthy, will try to summarize at the top. TLDR; Pro's and con's below. If you came here expecting standalone chess look elsewhere, if you are interested in a sandbox experience where you can create your own units read on. First and foremost I would like to point out something that I believe is the reason for said reviewers negative perception of this game, and that is that Wardens is NOT chess. If you go into Wardens expecting standalone chess, you will be disappointed. At present the only resemblance this game has to chess is the movement and arrangement of the pieces (for now), and that it is played on a chess board. However, despite one of the default game types being Capture the King, Wardens lacks practically all other b...
I think this game is worth buying. I am having a try making some new pieces and changing graphics as well for vanilla pieces. The game play with Faerie Chess Pieces is fun ,if you like alternate moves and powers. Game look good too ,with move / special animations and a nice Card to symboliize your on map Piece as well.
