About This Game

Play on Tilt Five™

New! Battle Map Studio now supports multiple Tilt Five headsets! Connect up to 4 headsets and wands on one device.

Battle Map Studio officially supports Tilt Five™! With the Tilt Five™ Wand as your brush, painting landscapes, building civilizations, and maneuvering characters become much more immersive. Watch your mountains rise, characters battle, and jungles grow right in front of you in holographic 3D. Gather your friends around the board to build a map or play a tabletop RPG together.

Custom Asset Import

Bring your own models and images to place as characters and props in your Battle Map Studio environment! FBX, OBJ, STL, Asset Bundle (.unity3d), PNG, and JPG are all supported.

There are so many great sites for downloading 3D models and 2D battle map assets. The model in the left-most section of this GIF was made using Hero Forge and the model in the center was downloaded from Unity Asset Store. The images in the third section were downloaded from 2-Minute Tabletop.

Map Layers

Add layers to your map to build multistory buildings, floating islands, or underground tunnels! Then, add additional layers to stack props on top of tables and other surfaces. Move layers up and down, duplicate them for easy reuse, or set them invisible to obscure parts of the map.

About the Game

Battle Map Studio is a playful map editor and RPG sandbox that makes world building fun, simple, and social. Use a variety of practical and amusing tools to paint forests and rivers, generate mountains, and construct houses. Build solo or collaborate with multiple players in real time online to bring your world to life!

With a growing collection of props, furniture pieces, and items to build with, you can let your imagination run wild while decorating castles, inns, and dungeons. When you’re finished building, set the mood and time of day using the light and fog controls. Then, populate your world with characters and creatures to set the stage for playing RPG campaigns.

With Battle Map Studio, you can...

  • Paint elevation, trees, and rocks, with a resizable brush, paint bucket, blaster, or draggable area.
  • Build in Column or Voxel mode.
  • Change scene lighting, fog, and time of day.
  • Build multistory forts and dungeons and furnish them with a variety of props.
  • Work in square or hex coordinates.
  • Scale, rotate, and reposition props and characters.
  • Quickly create rooms, tiles, and entrances with the auto-room tool.
  • Experiment with fun and procedural tools to generate large environments in a flash.
  • Export environment block geometry as a 3D model.

  • Join up with friends online to build maps together in real-time.
  • Connect your Hero Forge account and import minis.
  • Import your own custom models to use as characters or props (FBX, OBJ, STL, and .unity3d).
  • Import image files to use as 2D props or character tokens (PNG and JPG).
  • Share your maps on the Steam Workshop.
  • Play Battle Map Studio on Tilt Five™.

  • Place characters and monsters that can move and attack.
  • Roll 3D dice and automatically add up rolls.
  • Create and edit character sheets for tabletop role-playing games.
  • Use the fog of war system for team-only line of sight.
  • Snap top-down screenshots of maps for printing or using with other tabletop simulators.
  • Assign player roles like GM and player to better facilitate campaigns.

Decent map maker considering the fact that it's early access. Would love a way to make custom assets. And an option for steam remote play would be amazing as my players have no need to make maps, only play on them. OR make a heavily discounted version of the program that only allows playing. The UI is garbage as of now, hopefuly it improves over time. Will probably just use it to make custom top down 2d maps until it gets usable. Will rewrite the review when/if i test this thing out a bit more.

If a game requires internet to be played please disclose that information. Initially the game would not work without internet. It appears to be offline capable now!!

This game is a really good DnD application that sadly does not have many people I see using it. Tons of great potential, adding more features for DnD and making the lives of DND players and DMs much easier.

The best map maker I've used to date, Battle Map Studio lets you make your 2D maps become 3D! I especially love the terrain tool and how easy it is to elevate and flatten terrain. I also love the building tool, it is super easy to make buildings, even with hex grids. It does take a little bit to get the controls down, but the tutorials help a lot. The only thing that I think this game could improve on is adding different genres of blocks to the game. I know this game is centered around D&D games, but I would LOVE if the developer was able to add Sci-Fi or post apocalyptic buildings and decorations. My friends play a lot of Fallout, and they would love a map maker that catered to their genre. The price is a bit steep for an early access game, but I think it is worth the price. All in all, I would give this game an 8/10. Update: So I stopped playing Battle Map Studio a few months ago. There just wasn't enough content. I loved building terrain and hexes, the base system is good. There n...

In less than 2 hours I was able to learn the interface and build a pretty detailed landscape map. I like it. It looks great on the Tilt Five.

Really impressive map builder from Solo indie dev! Must buy if Tilt Five owner For Tilt Five AR Headset owners: Well its the only Tilt Five Virtual Tabletop available, so by default it is the best! Honestly its so impressive just to move around in the headset around a map built on your computer, that I can totally see a group of motivated folks using it as a hologram battlemap. I never got the hang of using the wand but its totally possible to use a wireless keyboard and mouse instead with the T5 and once you learn a few hotkeys, you can build maps in the headset. IMO you really only need to be able to pan/zoom/rotate with headset, and click a character to move/attack. I'd rather there be a wand setting for players who won't build in order to facilitate easy pickup (IE - trigger click creature, press button x for move, press button y for attack, other buttons/functions are for easiest camera movement) For Non-Headset owners: The actual act of map-building is really smooth, especially...

So as with most of these tabletiop "sandboxes" the playable part of it is extremely limited and the 3d maps you make aren't usable in any known systems. I like the base of it, there is something to build on here but it crashes so much! Even the demo is running badly. I feel like this generator would be better of as a asset for game creation(which it is) than any ttrpg running Note to dev: You are missing a d100 in dice choices.

Still quite a few problems with crashing, especially when trying to use weather tools, but I'm sure that will get fixed with patches. So far I love all the various options for assets, and love the fact that you can import Hero Forge figures into the maps. One thing I would like to see in the future (if it isn't already implemented and I just missed it) is the ability to export the maps you make into JPG's or PNG's so they can be physically printed out onto paper and posters for real world use. So far this studio is looking super promising and I'm stoked to see how the devs improve it over time!
