[gameplay] It's a point and click adventure game. There are simple RPG magic battles, which are fun enough, but can be tedious. grinding XP is a slow and somewhat boring process. you spend most of the game looking for everyday items to collect words in a foreign language. this increases your magic points and abilities. You also want to familiarize yourself with the words because your ultimate battle move depends on your picking the definition for foreign words quickly in order to cast more spells. The quests are somewhat obtuse at first, but get simpler as you go on and understand the game better. the game is very buggy, navigating is cumbersome and it's pretty easy to softlock yourself in this game. it autosaves, so it's not that big a deal, just alt + f4 out of the game and restart it. Not ideal, but surviceable. [language learning] The main point of this game is to practice a foreign language. I've played through the game in english -> korean. there are 10 languages availabl...

So I did my Master's Portfolio on learning languages through playing RPGs, so this game got my hopes up. The benefits of learning through gaming arise from using language in tasks for a non-linguistic outcome. It is a little research branch of Task-Based Language teaching if you are interested in looking it up yourself. That is not what this game does. This game has very standard matching vocabulary activities instead of using vocabulary in context. Then if you want to play hard mode you also do dialogues with grammar and vocabulary completely unrelated to the vocabulary specific activities that you are studying in parallel. The caveat for my review is that I only played for half an hour, so maybe the activities get better, but it seems like there is a lack of understanding on the developers part or possibly better content coming after this baseline is established.
If you support the making of educational games/software and are interested in helping the developers improve, this would be a good buy. At least it's priced right! If you're interested in a completed game with no flaws, you should probably wait on this. I bought to check if it would help my kids learn Spanish. A bit disappointed by some bad language from one of the first quest giving characters when entering the garden, English spelling errors ("comunication"), and occasionally having issues with character visibility due to no camera rotation. I do not find the combat particularly fun, but children might. I will keep checking in as updates are made. I hope the developers can make improvements through early access feedback.
LIGHT SPOILERS (but not really)! I bought the game this morning to see how far I could get into a completely new language. I ended up beating it casually in 6 hours. I decided to go for Spanish and now I'm about to do another run in either Chinese or Russian. My entire background in language is comprised of minoring in German and practicing Toki Pona periodically. Here are my general thoughts on the game both from gameplay and from a linguistics perspective. What is it? It is a point and click game where you explore three environments in search of shards to uncover a mystery. You can click on various objects and it'll index them into your core vocabulary. Referencing this vocabulary throughout the game will open chests and make combat much easier. The good; - Fairly unique concept executed in a fun way. Duolingo is great, but I find flashcards insufferable. I'll take flashcards disguised as witchcraft anyday. - I didn't realize that I was breezing through the game until late game h...
I wish it worked. As an ESL teacher, I'm constantly looking for ways to integrate video games into the classroom. I’ve tried this game a couple of times with my students. They enjoyed it during the first 10 minutes of gameplay, but then it got boring. The plot is okay, but the gameplay is repetitive. The combat mode feels pointless, and there’s no real language learning involved, even though that’s supposed to be the main focus of the game. Combat mode happens far too often. Completing missions is tedious—it takes way too long to travel from one place to another just to collect an item and progress in the game. The characters lack depth. They greet you, and then suddenly, you’re forced into a fight. The game relies too heavily on translation, which is detrimental to language learning. You can’t control the camera, so it’s hard to look around. On the bright side, the graphics are good, but there are some bugs. All the tasks involve matching words, which quickly becomes ...
you SHOULD support this game and games like it. i bought it at full price and while it may not be the perfect game, i think the purchase was worth it to support the dev's efforts and educational projects such as this one. i wanna preface this review rq --> this game has an excellent premise. i'm a russian major who sucks at russian, so i leapt on this game after seeing it advertised on tiktok. it is a GREAT idea and i really hope the devs continue to develop this game / games like it. i will be playing it to completion on the harder difficulty for russian, and if they make another game ill probably buy it if it supports the language. ...that all being said. even within the first 30 minutes of playing i can say there's a lot of issues happening here. CONS: - for a point and click adventure game, oh my god can it be hard to click. the characters movements feel spastic and the objects to click are sometimes so small it feels impossible to get it *just* right enough to unlock the vocab...
Tried to learn Japanese (English as main language) Disclaimer: I learned Japanese for several years and wanted to train my vocabulary with this game.
tl;dr
+ Good tutorial for people with no gaming experience at all + Mostly intuitive controls + Simple but cute art + Lots of opportunities to see words and repeat them = I liked the turn-based fighting system, but didn't see a connection with learning words - Lots of bugs (no game breaking ones, but very annoying stuff) - Unpolished pronunciation system (every word is pronounced by a different speaker in varying qualities) - No explanation of word building or other script (Kana/Kanji) - No explanation of sentence building or grammar - Wrong translations (this should not happen since language learning is the core of this game!) Bugs I encountered: - Starts minimized??? - Starts with 0% master volume - Bugs in the menu - Minimizes itself every 5 minutes I'm not sure if it's better suited for a different languag...
EDIT: I even went on their discord for help but they ignored me. They don't care about the PC port anymore. DON'T BUY UNLESS ON SALE BUT EVEN THEN you can get SOFT LOCKED at the VERY END of the game and can't continue, and you are stuck in the area with no way to leave, reloaded, closed and open the game but still the Main quest won't continue, the last update was over a year ago so there is a little chance to them ever fixing it. The game is too tedious to even think about starting over from the beginning and trying again. Others beat it but sadly I could't, good luck to anyone else that plays this. ALSO THERE ARE NO WALK THROUGHS ANYWHERE ON THE INTERNET AND NO ONE PLAYED LONG ENOUGH TO FINISH NOT EVEN THE DEVS. SO. YEAH Anyways, I may change my review if there ever is a fix which I doubt.
Alright, so at the time of this writing, I only have 2 hours of play. This game is called a language learning RPG. It gets the job done for sure. If you don't want the fun and challenge of learning a new language, don't play. But I will tell you they do a fairly good job of integrating language learning into game play. There is about 8+ languages you can choose from. Currently doing Chinese (Mandarin) as a native English speaker. I'll eventually do French as well. Game is presented as a Harry Potter meets Persona with Final Fantasy ATB combat. Click on objects in the world to learn what they are in chosen language. Learning them gets you battle resources. Eventually, you have to quiz yourself on what you learn to continue. There are also npc's in the world that only speak to you in chosen language. This is where things get hard and really test your learning skill. If you're serious about learning, I suggest having a notebook or notepad nearby to take notes on so you can learn. Take you...
They introduced the game as a magic puzzle solving game not a foreign language simulator. Learning another language is hard and when you put it as an integral part of the game it just makes it difficult to play. Devs should've focused on the magic part of the game since that was how they introduced it in the summary, and then the puzzle solving and the new language learning to help deepen the game's depth; instead they focused on the language part and it makes it really difficult to continue playing because of it, how am I suppose to answer someone in French when I don't know their language nor do I know how to speak it.
