FFIV was a great follow up from the first 3 in the series and overall I enjoyed the game a lot. This FF was definitely more story driven and I would almost slightly complain it's very linear due to the fact that you weren't able to chose jobs like you could in the 3rd, which doesn't provide wiggle room for the characters. The story and characters were great though, a lot of loss and a lot of changing party members(which was my other small complaint, because by the time you started to like a party member...poof...suicide...gone. Follow a 100% guide, there are missables achievements just like the first three. As for achievements, FFIV introduced some "grindy" one's where its completely RNG (looking up guides and past Reddit post, I got lucky(some people said it took more than 5 hours on some of the summons(there are 4) or the "Pink Tail"item(this one took me 3 hours). Steam deck verified. Overall, another great addition to the series.

Still good! Quite primitive but I think the vibes and soundtrack of this one are stellar. At times FF4 feels like a game out of time, like it's a game made in the 1600s or something. Story and combat are just fine, although I do like just about all the set pieces a lot. There's some cheap drama that the game even comments on, but this was one of the first games to really try a narrative driven approach, so I guess that's fair. Some very cool ideas, just very basic and relies entirely on presentation to carry it. Luckily the art team and Nobuo are up to the task as usual.

More story focused than prior games, though with a less flexible job system.

So this is the only top down FF game I've played, but from what I've seen and read it is pretty dang linear. And that's not a bad thing, but if you're looking for a game where you can build your own team or choose jobs for your team members, this isnt really the game for you. I liked it a lot, the story was very charming, so it has its pros and cons. I can see why this is such a beloved classic.

Fix. The. Font! It is insane that after 4 years you idiots still have not figured out that the font is terrible! It is an assault on the eyes. Unreadable. Previously this could be "fixed" by changing the font files of the English font to the Japanese font, or with the help of mods. After the most recent update, neither will work. Your only options now are to suffer the feeling of being stabbed in the eyes with every word you read, or to use the new "classic" font feature, which is somehow even WORSE! I am visually impaired, but these fonts make me wish I was fully blind. FIX THIS!

- Awesome directed sequences right off the bat; the Kaipo segment comes to mind. The immersion goes even further with scripted combat sequences without player control. Party banter in scripted moments, like resting at a camp, is really welcome and drills further into great character moments. "Meanwhile" cutscenes showing focus to other entities around the world. - 16 bit artwork is insane, the detail is fantastic. The background work is really amazing with the amount of detail they can fit in. - They definitely upped the difficulty, enemies don't drop anywhere near as quick and the ATB element really keeps you on your toes and engaged. I will say the random encounters feel a bit spongy; magic isn't as potent as the earlier games and there are a LOT of mages in your group this time around. - Feeling the difficulty spike especially hard around Troia. Not even just a "difficulty" issue but rather what feels like an overtuned enemy issue with a lack of resources. Random encounters will ...

I remember playing the SNES version as a kid, and the game still holds up. The story is one of the best in the entire series. Peak RPG!
