Pretty decent if it weren’t for the levelling system. This felt more like Final Fantasy trying something new rather than a Dragon Quest copy. It even has an actual story, and it’s not that bad.
Wait....they made a second one!?
The second game is also really good, and compared to the first game there are a lot of final moment for npcs. As well as that difference of tone, the levelling up system is different and really awesome. There are no classes just levelling individual things up like certain spells, weapon types, stats etc. Meaning you can have fun playing around with it :) I made my Maria a Bow-using Red Mage, my Firion was a Jack of All trades (sword n shield initially then dual swords and a few really levelled spells), and my Guy was a Axe & Dagger barbarian. Leon was a dual wielding Knight who could also use Cure like everyone else. If I ever play it again, there are a lot of spell and party combinations I thought about trying. I really like how this game experiments with new things, and you can too. I recommend it if you're interested, it's a lot fun :D Halfway through the game, FF2 videos started popping up on the internet (I dislike how things seem to track you even if you decline all cookies). An...
FFII presents a big evolutionary leap after FFI which wonderfully builds on and extends the roots of its predecessor. The story is more character driven and generally has more twists and turns. There are no classes or overall character levels. Instead, the leveling system revolves around a character's specific weapon/spell level. Namely, a character gets XP for a weapon/spell by using it. It is an interesting change that comes with its own pros and cons. It also features a pleasant OST which personally stood out to me more than that of FFI.
Final Fantasy 2 is interesting. It was the first FF that tried to tell a proper story. It's not a complex story, mind, but still entertaining and actually pretty dark. The thing this game is infamous for its leveling system. In FF2 every character can theoretically learn everything. But every stat, every weapon and every magic spell has to be leveled separately. The pixel remaster smoothed that leveling out quite a bit, so that is pretty nice. Definitely worth a look.
Fix. The. Font! It is insane that after 4 years you idiots still have not figured out that the font is terrible! It is an assault on the eyes. Unreadable. Previously this could be "fixed" by changing the font files of the English font to the Japanese font, or with the help of mods. After the most recent update, neither will work. Your only options now are to suffer the feeling of being stabbed in the eyes with every word you read, or to use the new "classic" font feature, which is somehow even WORSE! I am visually impaired, but these fonts make me wish I was fully blind. FIX THIS!
It's a good origin RPG from the series. Can be a little difficult without a walkthrough.
05/10 - Frustratingly Inconsistent. Final Fantasy II begins as an exciting evolution of the first game - introducing a lot of series staples for the first time, like Chocobos and Cid. Rudimentary, but welcome character interactions and cinematics also lend to a more emotive story that builds an endearing connection with your party and how they react to and approach their obstacles. The soundtrack and art design are very impressive and give the game a great identity. The more I played however, the more impatient I became to some of it's gameplay choices. Unbearably high encounter rates and enemy status effects that can stun-lock or insta-kill, felt artificial to cheaply fluff up playtime. These gripes don't detract enough from my overall positives, but it's hard to recommend Final Fantasy II in 2025 if you're not already passionate about the genre and have a nurtured patience for some of it's jank.
FINAL FANTASY. Best game, paired with the best music. What more can be said...
