This was a great, fun indie game! Its a shame this one is the first and Final. They should really make more! Edit: you guys aren't going to believe this...

This would be a positive evaluation as I had a decent enough time with the game overall, but because of very odd design quirks, and what was changed in the remaster, the more I think about it, the more it kind of ticks me off, especially given the amount of prestige surrounding this game in particular. It's one of those times I wished I could put a neutral rating instead. Despite cleaning up many of the bugs that plagued the original, I feel like not enough has been done to make the combat design actually more balanced, and while I'm absolutely no expert of the original, I'm theorizing that it may have gotten worse in a few ways. The difficulty balance of my adventure has been a complete and utter mess. The first half of the game is reasonably challenging at 0.5x EXP & Gils (because the default gains are completely overkill and already not representative of the original) with very rough edges in notable ups and downs, but the entire second half of the game is pure Auto-Attack slop. I...

I love the first Final Fantasy. Despite its relative simplicity in gameplay and story, it is one of my favourites to replay through for fun. However, this Pixel Remaster is probably the worst version to play on apart from the original NES release (which was good by 1987 standards, it just aged poorly). It's not "bad" per se, it's just that I find that a lot of the design choices that have been made don't really make sense. If you can, please play the GBA version of the game, which is better in nearly every aspect. First off, I have to mention that despite being made in 2021, this remaster still failed to add the option to skip cutscenes - which, considering the beginning of the game has a few cutscenes that are quite long, sometimes genuinely make me question if I should start a new game or not. None of the other versions have cutscene skips, but at least they had the excuse of being made 20+ years ago. For a remaster that's supposed to add "quality of life" features, it fails in that...

Nice modern QoL changes make this a breeze to play through. A bit short and quite simple by modern standards but an enjoyable romp nonetheless.

FINAL FANTASY is my favourite series and I would leave a positive review for all of them but I feel like the first one is good enough. It might not have so many features and tropes that fans of the series know like chocobos, moogles, cactuars, dragoons, etc but it's the first game in the series and that makes if possibly the best place to start for anyone who is new to it. The game is relatively short, the game mechanics are simple, and there aren't too many named characters that players need to keep track of. The jobs and the job system in the game are not as complex as they become later on (especially in III and V) but they offer enough variation to feel unique. My recommendation is that if you ever want to get into the series just get the Pixelated Remasters bundle and play them in chronological order. The more games you play the more you will discover when reoccurring characters, places, or monsters show up later on.
