The game has a lot of problems: starting with stupid spread when shooting, continuing with boring and imbalanced bosses, ending with lousy optimization. However, visual style, atmosphere, elaboration and presentation of the story, very competent rotation of stealth and action moments, variety of locations - makes the game really interesting and memorable. I don't know what they did in the remake, but the original is definitely worth going through
Disclaimer
First and foremost, XIII has mouse acceleration & saving issues with possible audio issues, all of these can be fixed by player input & guides shared on steam. In regards to saving you can remedy it by manually saving in the menu & also using the auto save key (F5) throughout the level, however you must be aware that the saves only restore you to the latest checkpoint not to where you saved. In some cases there are long gaps without checkpoints that can be extremely frustrating. XIII also has Unskippable cut scenes & sequences that halt player movement/interactions. This is not a problem on its own but in conjuction with the poor checkpoint system & boss fights utilising them, it can lead to frustration as you seem them multiple times after dying or failing the mission guidelines. One level in particular "infiltrate, disable generators & save hostage" can set you back minutes.
Gameplay
XIII is a PS2 era first person shooter forged out of co...

It's a fun fps game with unique visuals and decent music. Game doesn't feel boring at all, pace is really good and stealth missions breaks repetition. Story was interesting too, I didn't feel lost or bored from it. There are some issues though: Save system is weird even for a old game. Game has checkpoints but if you exit without saving the game you will lose your progression. It's best practice to save the game via F5 in each checkpoint. You will need some patches to run the game optimally on modern systems, look at guides for them! Aim kinda sucks, weapons are pretty much useless at long range except crossbow. You need to get really close to enemies or most of your shots won't do anything.

XIII - Classic review This is an ok shooter. Not that impressive mechanically but it has plenty of weapons and a fun gadget for traversing vertically. Whether you like it or not boils down to how much you can appreciate B-movie tropes. If you do, then there should be no problems. It's a bit clunky experience nowadays since it was released in 2003 and gunplay is inconsistent as some guns are effective and some aren't that much. It's probably recommendable to play this Classic version rather than the remake. Soundtrack is mostly just stylized drumming and piano chords and gets pretty annoying at times. All in all, this is a pretty good game but does have some problems, for instance, there is some forced stealth and the checkpoints are very few and far between. Story is what you play this for, and while it holds few surprises, it feels engaging to the end.

I love this game. I love the soundtrack. I love the avant-garde of the early 2000s.
