Return to Shironagasu Island

Return to Shironagasu Island is a story that pitches a fun, if cliche, premise of journeying to a mysterious island to drag its secrets into the light. Unfortunately it never reaches much of any kind of satisfying climax or catharsis and instead spends a majority of its run time spinning its wheels before diving head first into banal predictable plot twists and unearned melodrama. Its biggest issue is its characters who never exactly feel like characters, and are instead pieces on a board to make the plot go where it needs to. We find out literally nothing about Sen and Neneko beyond their surface level roles of detective and socially awkward assistant. We never find out the nature of their relationship or why they're working together at all. The rest of the island's inhabitants are mostly just one-note archetypes and range from completely indistinguishable to unlikable. They barely even react to the atrocities happening on the island right before their eyes, let alone the island'...

Surprisingly decent and fairly underrated. To begin with, it's a classic murder mystery with a whiff of drama. Add a twist and a secluded location and you might be accused with plagiarism, but a horror story with competent characters? Now you've made a true original. Lastly, add cute heroines and well, now you've created art. Sadly toward the end is where the writing sadly starts to crumble; they could not quite decide a good way (or maybe had too many ways) to wrap everything up, and it felt like too many different factors were thrown in. The underlying plot behind it all was the weakest part of the game. But with that said, the extra epilogue that you can access after beating the game is the true gem. If you can tolerate the fan service, and I mean THE [i]fan service[/i] that's where the fun begins and ironically I enjoyed it more compared to the latter half of the main game.
