It's been a long time since I've played a game with such tremendous soul and artistry. But it's not a game for everyone. If you're someone who needs to be able to experience all content in a single playthrough, then this game isn't for you. If you are someone who can't stand minimal handholding, then this game isn't for you. This game locks you out of content (mostly through the recruitable characters), has minimal handholding, and has lots of secrets that you may find frustrating to find if you don't use a guide. None of these bother me. In fact, I adore these elements. And as such, I love this game. 9/10.

The game crashes every 10-15 minutes on Steamdeck, and every 30 minutes or so on PC. Given that it's a manual save system, this essentially makes the game unplayable unless you want to frequently repeat content and throw the dice in hopes that it doesn't crash before the next save point. This quality of port is completely unacceptable.

Unfortunately, the game crashes mentioned are still there on the steam deck as of this review. It's a shame as I was looking forward to reliving some old-school jrpg goodness. As it stands you're better off looking elsewhere until the issues that plague this version are dealt with.

DO NOT BUY THIS GAME under any circumstances. It crashes constantly. It should be illegal to sell this. Steam will also refuse to pay you back for this broken garbage if you play for more than 2 hours (I kept trying to get it to work for 14 hours. My "58 hour play time" counts me leaving the game on while I was off the computer).

I'm not having the technical problems that other reviews claim are present in this game, it's running perfectly fine for me, but the game is just so astoundingly mediocre that I still can't recommend it. I'm in love with its presentation, everything art-wise pleases me, but it's not fun to play, and it is hard to understand/progress without referring to guides frequently. If you love 1990s pre-rendered backgrounds (like I do,) and you are interested in a strange, unconventional form of turn-based combat, you may love it, but I'm over here forcing myself to finish it like it's a chore.

Chrono Cross is a good JRPG with an incredible soundtrack, some good story segments, and interesting concepts marred by aged combat, throwaway characters, and a heavily confusing story. Same feel to the original, so glad now I don't need memory cards or both discs. A lot easier now with the game enhancements. Will continue to play it until I get all the characters.
