Synchronous turn based against AI it just annoying and I dislike it. Having to rush to close popups in the middle of my screen to save my units is not for me. If I want to feel rushed I'm going to play a RTS. Also some things is the game are not well balanced or make little sense. For example you can discover aircraft carriers without even knowing flight. Whale fishing gives you bonuses in food production in lakes, really? That's just some of the tech related wonkiness.

About This Game
CREATE YOUR CIVILIZATION
Combine up to 60 historical cultures as you lead your people from the Ancient to the Modern Age. From humble origins as a Neolithic tribe, transition to the Ancient Era as the Babylonians, become the Classical era Mayans, the Medieval Umayyads, the Early Modern era British, and so on. Each culture will add its own special gameplay layer, leading to near-endless outcomes.
MORE THAN HISTORY, IT’S YOUR STORY
Face historical events, take impactful moral decisions, and make scientific breakthroughs. Discover the natural wonders of the world or build the most remarkable creations of humankind. Each game element is historically authentic. Combine them to build your own vision of the world.
LEAVE YOUR MARK ON THE WORLD
The journey matters more than destination. Fame is a new and unifying victory condition. Every great deed you accomplish, every moral choice you make, every battle won will build your fame and leave a lasting impact on the world. The player with the most fame will win the game. Will you be the one to leave the deepest mark on the world?
MASTER TACTICAL BATTLES ON LAND, SEA & AIR
Each battle in HUMANKIND™ plays out like a mini turn-based board game on top of the actual world map. Unstack your armies and command each of your units, including the emblematic units of your culture and their special abilities. Construct siege weapons to besiege and occupy cities. Fight in large battles spanning multiple turns, and don’t hesitate to bring in reinforcements!
CUSTOMIZE YOUR LEADER
In HUMANKIND™, you’ll be playing the leader of your society as an avatar that you create and customize! Your avatar will evolve visually over the course of the game as your civilization develops. You’ll also be able to level up your leader via a meta-progression system to unlock custom looks that you can showoff to strangers and friends alike in multiplayer matches up to 8 players.

Not the Civ Killer people were hoping for, maybe, but it's definitely a decent game that brings something new to the 4X genre. The district system provides a fun extra layer of strategy when it comes to building out your cities. Advancement through the Eras is also a place for strategic choices, as, rather than having to keeping one culture through the game, you can select a new culture for each era, each with different uniques and gameplay focuses. You can also choose to stay in one era after you unlock the ability to progress, trading technological advantage for the opportunity to earn more Era Stars (collecting these is the main way of winning the game). Combat is interesting as battles take place in a sort of sub-game within the map rather than directly on it. Story moments provide neat ways of fleshing out your culture with temporary or permanent effects. Overall, it's a fresh take on the genre that, while lacking some of the polish of Civ, offers rich strategy and satisfying game...
Culture, Trade & Civilization
I am an Anthropology bachelor's student (with a background in History due to my professor father). HUMANKIND has got to be one of my favorite games of all time. In this review, I'm mainly going to discuss certain aspects of the game, specifically how development and change feels.
Culture
Culture, in HUMANKIND, comes differently at every stage of development. You go from the Classical period to Contemporary, all while changing your culture in each period your progress through. Each culture has various differences, from being more industrially focused, to agricultural, to more warlike folk (shout out to the Americans & Soviets). Cultures are not branching, meaning when each new period comes around, you can switch from something as different as the ancient Greeks to the Germanic Teutons, or so. While it seems that may be very contrasting, it's largely an aesthetic difference, and the real aspect of culture shines ...
About as shallow as Civ, the difference is what face it wears more than anything. Worth maybe $20 at most. Also beware the great arbitrary culture wall, you'll get -purple star for just about anything you do, and your citizens like purple stars more than human rights, not that you can have human rights in this...
Humankind is very similar to Civilization, and it has the same "one more turn" factor. Highly recommended, but beware it is very addictive
The AI, beyond nation difficulty, always way too aggressive and will collaborate with one another to joint war you for no reason. They could have more shared borders with one another and more reason to fight one another but the AI will always target the player (who already starts with worse outputs). I keep trying to give it more chances but every time I boot it back up I'm reminded why its an unplayable piece of shit. I genuinely enjoy the city building and territory claiming but that's it. The combat is wonky and glitchy, the trade system is convoluted, the war support system is broken, and the AI system is so bad that it makes me uninstall and go back to Civ. Unless you ide of fun is save scumming over and over again trying to get a single positive outcome then don't bother with this garbage. Just go back to Civ and pray that if they get a sequel that they listen to the numerous complaints and fix this. I genuinely want to dump hours into this game but nation is too easy and everyth...
I wanted to enjoy this game, but it just felt so... pointless? It's hard to explain exactly what I mean, but it was like the civilisations I was raising were just so hollow and lacked any sort of identity or fun defining feature. What's worse, some of the core systems of the game that I really didn't care for have since gone on to by copied and have ruined the most recent *actual* CIV game for me too... so that's fun. Look if you like it, bully for you, but it's not for me and I won't recommend it to others.
Beautiful Game, with divisive game play loop. I love the way ages are handled and the three round on the map combat, but I realize it's nit for everyone. Humankind may not be perfect, but for me it's one of the best 4x games of the decade.
Had been holding off on this one for a while due to the mixed reviews, but between said reviews slowly improving, a really good summer sale price, and Civ deciding to dedicate an entire entry in their franchise to ripping off this game's central mechanic, I finally decided to give it a try. Only done two games so far, but they've been enjoyable and I can easily see myself coming back to this one every once in a while. The hazard of continuously advancing through the eras is that you never really get to feel like your civ, which is a shame since they feel a bit more unique than Civ manages to do. A chunk of the problem comes down to aesthetics: between the more zoomed-out nature of the map, and the less frequent themed music, you never really get a chance to sink yourself into whoever you're playing as. Each custom leader having the same handful of voices with no-subtlety dialogue doesn't help, though it's still better than the various "hmm"s of Civ6. Combat can be a bit finicky to m...
I think this is the best game in it's genre. It's less complex than Civ VI, but a lot more approachable.
