Chicory: A Colorful Tale is a beautifully crafted indie adventure that combines heartfelt storytelling with innovative gameplay centered around creativity and expression. At its core, the game invites players into a charming, hand-drawn world where color has mysteriously vanished, leaving everything in dull grayscale. You step into the shoes of a dog wielding a magical paintbrush, tasked with restoring vibrancy and life to the world around you. This simple premise unfolds into a touching narrative about self-discovery, community, and overcoming doubt, wrapped in a warm and inviting art style that feels both nostalgic and fresh. One of the game’s most striking features is its painting mechanic, which acts as both a tool and a form of communication. The paintbrush is incredibly versatile—you can color the environment, create platforms to traverse obstacles, and solve puzzles that require creative thinking. This mechanic encourages experimentation and personalization, allowing player...

Entirely overrated. While the music and art are generally very good, everything else about this game quickly becomes so tedious and boring. From the simple puzzles, general map traversal, to the large blank white screens, the monotony of it all was so degrading I could hardly stomach more than 1 chapter per session -- and yes, I understand the game WANTS me to paint everything, but as a player you have to decide whether or not it is even worth your time or energy. Painting things (the main thing you do) can be very finicky as you are not given much precision. Likewise, you are given a limited color pallet (4 colors), which in theory COULD work but please explain why we need 2 shades of essentially the same color depending on the region. I feel like holding the color swap button for a color wheel with more than 4 colors would have made leagues more sense and allowed more creative freedom especially with how I want to paint my world. Let's not forget the story of Chicory: it's ...
There's No Such Thing As Perfect. You Are As Beautiful As You are. With All Your Imperfections, You Can Do Anything. - One Wise Barracuda In A Bathtub.
Damn, how do I miss this gem four years ago? Chicory: A Colorful Tale tells an emotional journey of doubt, self-loathing, and eventually acceptance, all wrapped in a colorless canvas waiting for you to unleash your imagination. Even though my artistic skill sets may be lacking, I still love every color I draw throughout the whole game. Not only that, the metroidvania approach to exploration is very rewarding. There are tons of secrets all over the world encouraging you to explore. This game is truly something special.
Things I Like A...

Early on in the game, I attended a drawing class where I was asked to reproduce a painting of a grinning dog. The resulting image, which ended up looking like The Lorax suffering from a late stage Ebola infection, received near-unanimous praise. When one of the other students dared to doubt the quality of my work, declaring (entirely accurately) that my status as the world's premier artist was the result of nepotism, she was indignantly shouted down by everyone else. If Chicory: A Colorful Tale had actually tried teaching me to paint, rather than celebrating my every brushstroke as if I were the second coming of Van Gogh, then perhaps I could have forgiven its anodyne banality. As it stands, I found the puzzles too easy, the map traversal too tedious, and the characters so painfully, inoffensively nice as to be completely depersonalized. Whatever mechanical innovations the game brings out during its boss fights are immediately undercut by the copious number of checkpoints pu...

I don't get why this game is so popular. It's like trying to colour an adult colouring book with crayons, and the plot is as deep as an adult colouring book, too.
