TL;DR: If you liked freelancer back in the day, you will LOVE this. This game is effectively freelancer with a sprinkle of eldritch horror flavour. Gameplay wise it it 1:1 freelancer in all regards. Trading, dog fighting, missions, ship customisations. But it also adds on top of the freelancer formular, by giving you A LOT of interesting quests, interesting places to explore (i litterally spend hours in every single system just to explore). Oh and a lot of boss fights and interesting loot as well. So yeah, if you liked freelancer this is the game for you. There is only one bigger complaint that i have: The AI is horrible at dogfighting. It tends to be really good at doging (sometimes to an annoying degree), but as good as it is at doging, as bad is it at actually hitting you. Meaning you follow the enemy for ages trying to hit them, while at the same time all the allies of said team mate are no real threat to you. I would like if at least in the more dangerous areas the...

About the Game

The spiritual successor to Freelancer, Underspace is an open-world sandbox RPG with a Lovecraftian twist, where every star system is handcrafted, and every star system has something to see or do. Jump into the bizarre galaxy of Croft, step into the role you want, and thrive alone or online with friends (multiplayer on near term Early Access roadmap). But beware! The storms rule the stars.
Be a miner picking through crystallized bones of ancient star beasts, a trader hauling artifacts to far-flung outposts, a pirate robbing spacetrains, an explorer combing through lost stellar cities, or a hunter chasing down unknowable monstrosities that spew forth from the storms. Brave violent weather, eldritch beasts, and the terrors of the unknown as you make your mark in the universe.

i write to warn potential buyers with steam deck that the game is not playable i have tried compatibility mode (experimental, ge, ...) none work
Never played the original Freelancer but this game really scratches the itch from other great games like Crimson Skies. Well worth the price to support the dev. Game feels good on the features. Lots of quests and places to see. 50hrs in and I've only went halfway through the main quest and been sidetracked off on an adventure around the stars trying my hand at piracy instead. Still needs that final posish the dev has mentioned, voice acting etc. But the heart of the game is there and its great. Updates have been pretty regular and I look forward to the finished product. However, its well worth it as is.
Desperatly needs work on sound design and voiceovers(at least make it AI for now)
Will wait for such update before playing. Can't immerse right now.
Tried it on three different computers, all of which met the minimum requirements, and it was borderline unplayable framerates on all of them. Meanwhile Freelancer, 20 years ago, looks better and runs fine. It seems like it might be up to the hype, but it's just silly I can play a majority of the most demanding modern titles and not this.
Fun game, I hope this game gets the support it deserves to allow the devs to complete it.
eerily similar to FREESPACE. got new stuff and not as railroady as Freespace. You will be allowed to go into the higher levels as soon as you want. but do really want to go up against level 35 when you are just lvl 5. because they will KILL you. so Good game. don't forget to SAVE if you have been out of a station for a long time.
Still in rough shape, but the game have solid foundation and could be really good when full released
This is the freelancer upgrade i have been waiting for. I wish it was multiplayer.
