About This Game

Depths of the Forgotten - FREE EXPANSION

Eldest Souls now includes ‘Depths of the Forgotten’: a free, major expansion which introduces a new and perilous region, three new bosses, a selection of special weapons, a weapon customisation system, and an all-new, obliterating ability.

Entrenched within the very bowels of existence, far removed from the moon’s pale radiance, rots an ancient abyss: The Forgotten Depths. It is as these unfathomable reaches, that Eksyll caged those that no longer served his abysmal purpose; a general with naught to command; an heir of crippling malcontent; and a King, consumed with the elongation of his own hollow existence. The very world, and all within it, had long forgotten these forlorn souls, until now…

Step forth into the void once more, brave warrior. For the deepest depths are calling, and froth with the bitterest vengeance.

Eldest Souls is what happens when someone reads a Dark Souls wiki, snorts a line of pixel-art nostalgia, and says, “Yeah, I can make that - but like, only the boss fights.” From the get-go, the game flaunts the LORE, only to hand you what feels like a collection of discarded Tumblr poetry and cryptic monologues stapled together with dramatic lighting. It desperately wants to be Dark Souls - but without the actual soul. No world to explore, no chilling quiet ruins to stumble into, no optional horrors waiting beneath a crypt. Just corridors. Corridors leading to bosses. And then more corridors. It's like walking through an empty house where the only difference is the color of the walls. “But it’s a boss rush game,” they cry. And yes, I do love some good boss rushes. I crave punishment. But this isn't punishment in the fun, “I'm getting better” way. This is punishment in the “I forgot to pay my taxes and now the IRS is here with a sledgehammer” kind of way....

Interesting Souls-like game that has challenging boss fights and intriguing story to know about the fallen kingdom with the characters and music/sound design getting to hooked. Overall its a short but fun experience to play so its worth to buy the game.

I love this game because there really ins't anything else quite like it out there. Once you understand how to play the game instead of having the game play you, it goes from seeming impossible to becoming reasonable. Yes, this game is VERY HARD, but not impossible by any means... it just takes perseverance and a little dedication to get through it. I beat all of the bosses on PS4 and since it was 2 bucks on sale, I couldn't resist getting it again. Gameplay wise, there are three totally distinct styles you can choose to try and you do not have to commit to any of them. If you want to respec your upgrades, you are allowed to do that freely. One is based on speed, one is based on fury, and one is based on defense. Normally, I like a good parry mechanic but I don't feel like every single game needs one, and the dodge mechanic works fine here. Once you learn how to use it properly, the cooldown of it is more than sufficient to get the job done. I understand that this style of ...

TL;DR: Only buy if on sale, you really like boss rush games, and you can waste the time it takes to beat it. I love Souls and Souls-like games. Salt and Sanctuary is one of the first indie titles to get it right, but Eldest Souls is not like that. The game is punishing, but does not reward you for adapting to those punishments. As others have said, the dash mechanic is the biggest failure point of this game. The speed you see in the trailers? You don't get that until a little over halfway through and by that point you're so used to your current play style that it feels as though you start from square 1 trying to learn how to play that way. If only square one was fun. The game is Souls in name alone. It does not try to redeem itself by encouraging you to explore the world. It is empty corridors that expect you to enjoy the run between boss fights, because you'll spend half the game running to the next fight with 2-3 pieces of minor lore that don't really expand upon the world that much...

I didnt like the gameplay, it felt extremely weight against the player which i understand but still kinda sucks. Also you have me fighting a 2d-3d boss with somewhat questionable hit-boxes and u dont even let me lock on it. Why?

I feel like this game had a lot of potential, but it missed the mark for me. There is a pretty big world to explore with various npcs and lore sprinkled throughout, but I do not see why I should care about any of it. I have played many souls-like games, and I reached the end of this one in only 5 hours. It also feels weird to me that a game where the only combat is bosses features only 9 of them. Perhaps the enjoyment from this game comes from complete mastery, but I do not think I am going to revisit this game for another playthrough.
