About This Game

OVERSEAS is a collection of short art games, or digital poems, which are joined together by a common interface – a mysterious place resembling a spaceship.

It is not quite a game: there is no challenge and no story in the usual sense. The goal is to take a journey across worlds to perceive the associative relations between them and figure out the obscure meaning of what is going on. Quotes by Heraclitus, throat singing, a plastic bag dancing in the wind – here, like in poetry, all sorts of things are tied together.

The collection is potentially unlimited, and in the course of time new games will be added. Now there are four episodes – each is designed for 5–15 minutes of gameplay and has an ending.

Tlön

In this episode, the fleetingness of a moment is simulated. The player wanders in a psychedelic digital jungle, among elusive objects changing their shape when nobody is looking at them. Tlön is a world of nature, wild but quite fragile.

La forêt

It is a game with a touch of horror, inspired by Max Ernst’s paintings of mysterious forests. By looking around, the player continually transforms the landscape. Also, you can plant a tree to trigger an uncanny chain reaction.

Sacred Grove

Here you can learn secret shamanic techniques and experience what it means to be truly connected to nature. You will feel powerful… or powerless? Maybe sometimes it is better just to let it go.

Chernodyrsk / Black Hole City

This episode is a simulator of a Russian gopnik (urban white trash) struggling through an identity crisis. Its unique mechanics allows you to think about the vanity of all worldly things while wandering around a bad neighbourhood.

If you, like me, like an unusual experience, you should try Overseas! Even if you don't really like walking simulators. The games are very short, and at the same time, each fragment contains an interesting idea. I want to note the original graphic style with an mixture of glitch art and generative art, which gives an unusual disturbing atmosphere. I think that's what you could really call "art games". There are games that you spend hours or days playing and eventually forget. Here, on the contrary - each small fragment is remembered and leaves an unusual aftertaste. I definitely recommend it.

Really intense and introspective if you take the time to explore it.* Chernodyrsk especially!

Amazing visuals and sound in each of these short games. Each world has a distinct tone and atmosphere but they are all expertly crafted and make a really interesting whole. I like this collection a lot and would love to see more like it. I spent a lot of time in 'tlön', enjoying the shifting audio/visual landscape. Such an interesting use of video!

Overseas is an experience. Each of the games that are part of it have their own ambiance and feel. Honestly, the devs could expand on this model into a whole world of worlds that you navigate through. For the brief moment that Overseas is, it was enjoyable. A certain rain achievement evaded me until I stumbled across it and was very pleased. I look forward to if/when the devs make this into a VR adventure, because that would be wicked cool.

Really loved this game! Each of the four worlds had a compelling concept, and the audio/visuals were quite unique and atmospheric. Well done!

Meh... As a massive fan of walking simulators, this was ok at best (not good, not bad, but I'll give it a thumbs up because no neutral option); was expecting more tbh. The voices/dialogue are cringe, honestly. If you like it, cool, I just don't really care much personally. May or may not refund, we'll see.

I played this game with friends, and I think overall, none of us were particularly enthralled by it. I appreciate that it's an art game, and thus it must be judged on what it is rather than what it's not, even then, I find it hard to recommend it to anyone. Out of the four games on offer, I only enjoyed one (the shamanistic one, that was cool!), the others just made me too unnerved to really decode any meaning from them. Maybe that's the point, I don't know. If this game were a dollar, I would be more willing to recommend it, but as it stands now, it's almost $5 AUD, which for a game that has less than an hour's worth of content is a bit steep. That being said, bringing something new to the table is always commendable, so if you happen to see this game when it's cheaper at Christmas or something, then maybe go for it, otherwise, nah. 3/10.

Impressive use of sound design and high-definition visuals, the spaces are uniquely immersive. Tlön was my favourite episode. Plus, best main menu ever
