Campy horror indie adventure. Lots of fun, lots of deaths. “Cursed Roots” draws you in with a unique, retro-inspired look (additional bonus to MastroBros for not equating “retro” to “pixel art” here) and keeps you in with a classic horror set-up. After getting a call from a haven’t-seen-in-a-long-time auntie about uncle who passed away, you drop everything and take a first plane home; after all, they took you in and raised you like their own son after your parents mysteriously disappeared. What you find there looks odd, however… The house fell into a deep state of disrepair and auntie is acting strange – not talking much, offering you some kind of weird, foul-tasting tea… After passing out and waking up in an old, moldy room you decide to investigate. What follows is a whole bunch of campy horror, cheesy monsters, and twisted revelations – all the elements of a good old quality niche indie. Gameplay is classic point’n’click with extensive inventory and lots...

Beat this game in a single sitting with my girl friend for Halloween. There are a few complaints. But overall I give this a positive review. Pros: I liked the unique look of everything, it was consistent and blended well together. The story was interesting and at times exciting. I just wish a few things were explained in more detail. Cons: The Doll Puzzle was abstract as hell, but at least it fit the "this makes sense" after you figure it out. The timed puzzles... Oh man, the one at the end... That was brutal. You never established in the game's mechanics that you could both unlock and lock closed doors. You established you could unlock them, but not that you could lock them again and that a puzzle would depend on this fact. The Maze puzzle... Cute at first, until you realize you have to sacrifice health in order to beat it. Again a random mechanic thrown in with no previous example or instructions. That said overall, the game was fun and enjoyable. The streamlined interface...
Largely bad and not really worth your time. Plot and scares are generic, puzzles are severely underhinted, the interface is cumbersome, and to make things worse, there is a BIG maze that exists for no other purpose to waste your time.
I enjoyed it. Have been a fan of point and click puzzle adventure games for a long time and I enjoyed this one. It was a bit more challenging because you had to come back for items and multiple search things to get everything. Was enjoyable. The wire puzzle was insane though, gave me a lot of urgency to try and get done.
A point & click horror game with an engaging story and awesomely spooky visuals. I'll agree that the overall spirit of this title definitely reminds me of (MacVenture's) Uninvited, but it's much more than that. There's a variety of mini-game-like puzzles, you can be chased from room to room, and it subverts your expectations on what you can and cannot do in a point & click. I absolutely love the art style, the story is great, and the sound design is on point. My only gripe would be that some of the puzzles seem overly difficult/convoluted, but this is really a non-issue in the end for me, because hey, that's what guides are for, right? lol Didn't notice any bugs or glitches. Runs smoothly. Recommending for horror geeks and fans of point & clicks.
Overall, I enjoyed playing the game. I did find some of the puzzles a bit difficult, but I'm not good at puzzles so do with that what you will.
