About the Game

Protect space against the last wave of an enemy that used to be mankind's ally: a mysterious intelligent artificial life form. Take control of enhanced trainee pilot Aya, or the mysterious veteran pilot Zarak and fight your way through waves of enemies in order to save mankind and to learn more about yourself and also about your enemy.

Wings Of Bluestar is a horizontal hand painted and frame by frame animated HD game, no photobashing, 3D nor pre-rendered assets are used. Every asset is hand crafted and detailed by the same artist, which gives the game its visual integrity.

Wings Of Bluestar is a shoot'em up game that takes the solid gameplay of horizontal arcade shmups and modernizes it for modern PC and consoles use. The game achieves this by adding a lot of features like HD graphics, trophies, a deep story mode that, under certain circumstances, offers dialog choices and therefore multiple endings, gamepads, keyboard and arcade stick support, a shop to unlock artworks, extra credits, sound test, extra game modes and more.

Gameplay-wise, the player has access to two ships (characters), each with its own control, weapon upgrades and scoring system. They also vary in speed, protection and fire power, so each player can find their own style.

Wings Of Bluestar is a hybrid between classic shoot'em ups and "bullet hells" (Danmaku's), so everyone can have their fun.
Despite the game being horizontal, it also has a lot of vertical scrolling as well, to add to the action.

In addition the essential modes like Arcade, local multiplayer, boss rush and training, Wings Of Bluestar adds an extra story mode, for players who want to get more into the story.
The Story Mode is played like short Visual Novel phases between stages. In those phases, the player will have to make dialog choices. And if some conditions are met, it can influence the story and lead to different endings.

  • Single and local two players.
  • Gamepad (Xbox 360, Xbox One, Dualshock 4), arcade stick and keyboard support, with a button mapping option.
  • HD 2D hand painted visuals.
  • Each ship has its own play style, weapon upgrade and scoring system.
  • Hi-scoring system involves a risk vs reward approach.
  • Huge bosses with varied attack patterns.
  • 8 stages.
  • A story mode in the style of a visual novel game that plays between stage/missions and, if certain conditions are met, offers dialog choices leading to different endings.
  • In-game shop using in-game currency to unlock extra features.
  • A gallery, featuring original artwork, concept art, and fanarts to unlock.
  • A Boss Rush mode that lets you fight against bosses under a timer.
  • Steam Trophies.

I'm having a lot of fun with this game and happy it turned out as well as it looked. The game and music reminds me a bit of Pulstar and Blazing Star on the Neo Geo, with a mix of more modern bullet hell elements. There are great quality of life extras that make practicing the harder levels and bosses less of a chore. It's pretty impressive it was all done by one person and I'm looking forward to giving it a review on my channel. Like any early release I've run into a few bugs here and there that I am sure will get ironed out, but I would recommend this game to anyone who appreciates a good presentation to their shmups, something missing in most of the modern releases. Support Indie devs please especially when they release something so clearly well done. -SJ

It's like a modern R-Type with really impressive hand-drawn graphics and a cool OST. Really solid game, recommended!

We're currently in an era where the term 'indie' has been cynically misused by companies to sell products made by not-so-independent teams of developers. As a result, the standards required for true indies to get recognized have risen slowly over time, and the most valuable marketing technique of being able to say you're indie has been taken away. Wings of Bluestar is a real indie game. One person made everything here. It's got the gritty punk vibes you'd hope for from an indie game; rough around the edges but a singular cohesive vision. Wings of Bluestar's biggest strength is how it handles player progression. The entire game-flow feels very much like a game from the console era pre-internet. There's an in-game shop that allows you to purchase numerous unlockables, such as additional credits, a boss rush mode, and an art gallery. There is traditional arcade gameplay in here, and anyone looking for a true shmup experience can do that right from the get-go. But if you just want to chil...

Really cool shoot'em'up with hand drawn graphics. I really like the story mode that adds a "visual novel" dimension to it (though i wish i could go explore the ship haha). Gameplay is very solid with good scoring mechanics, bullet cancel, directional turrets, etc. The level of challenge is high but for experienced shmup players it should be exactly what they want. For the others that are, like me, less skilled, you can use continues and also lower the difficulty! I had played the demo from the festival and liked it, the rest of the game is even better... Really recommend, it's fun and made with passion!

What if you got Pulstar, Blazing Star, R-Type, that oldschool 90s shmup DNA and mixed it with more frantic danmaku bullet hell elements to spice things up? And what if you did that while paying homage to the aesthetic of 80s anime space operas? You would get Wings of Bluestar. Made by one person only, this beast of a game hits in all the right spots. Starts sweet and comfy and then progressively gets more and more intense as the levels and spectacular bosses give everything they've got with the trademark insane danmaku bullet patterns. Sounds intimidating, but the game gives you the opportunity to earn a lot of credits through the scoring system, gives you multiple difficulty options and even let's you practice the stages you've beaten, letting you familiarize yourself with later stages without having to go through all Arcade mode again. Even in its intensity, Wings of Bluestar is still accessible (though you can easily ignore that and go oldschool raw if you prefer). I must say tho...

I have been following this game since it's inception. What really stuck out was the graphics. It's all hand painted with allot of detail in the environment. The game is a combination of Pulstar and Blazing star with a touch of R-type. it works really well. i found myself addicted to play the game again when i died. oh yes you will die, but you will make it a bit further each time you try again. That is what a shmup is all about. It also helps that the sound effect are really crunchy with great visual effects. Negatives: 1 Would be nice to customize the rotation speed of your floating turrets. 2 Some sections move a bit to quickly. Like stage 3 (i think) at the gear section where you move downward. I died there the most. 3 This is very subjective, but the music wasn't very memorable to me. Not that it's bad. Maybe it will grow on me as i play through this game over and over. Small nitpicks aside, i love this game. It became everything i hoped it would be and more. Highly recommend th...

Very good Side Scrolling & Hybrid Bullet Hell Shoot Em Up. Impressive Beautiful Art work through out and wonderful story line. Great Controls, Well designed 8 + Big Stages. Lots of variety of enemies and super cool Bosses. Cool soundtrack, 3 Difficulty levels to choose from..Easy, Normal, Hard. 2 Awesome ships to control..Bluewing Ship, The Defensive with a shield (Force). Altair Ship, The offensive no shield but well armed. Nice influences from the classic R-Type, Pulstar & Blazing Star Arcade games. Lots of hard work as gone into this game and i have been a follower right from the beginning. If you are a fan of this type of shoot em up you will love this. Highly Recommend...Buy this game...Both Thumbs UP...Superb Work :) SHOOT EM UPS 4 LIFE!!!

A fun and challenging shoot-em-up, with a ridiculous amount of hand-painted art. Pretty amazing that all the art and programming was done by one person. There are a bunch of unlocks and trophies too for the completionists. Recommended :)

A really fun horizontal shmup that reminded me a lot of R-Type and Pulstar. The hand drawn art is what separates it from the rest, and it's not just cutscenes- everything from your ship, to the backgrounds to the enemies are all hand drawn and look great. As you progress you earn money which you can use to unlock gallery, sound test and boss rush. But most importantly you can buy more credits so you can keep going. There's story mode, which includes a sort of visual novel game before getting into the shmupness. Not really my thing, although I do appreciate the artwork as well as an auto on to blast through the text. Then there's arcade mode which is why we're all here. But the more and more I was playing this game, I couldn't help but think that it would be incredible if the game would cater not just to shmup fans but also visual novel fans. For example, let's say you really like visual novel games but not interested in the shmup part... maybe add an option to make you near invi...
