Some games are fun in the moment and then there are games like Bastion, the ones that stay with you years later. I remember booting it up not expecting much beyond a stylish indie action game, but what I found was something far more affecting. At its core, Bastion is simple: you play as “The Kid,” wandering through a shattered world, fighting creatures and piecing together what’s left after a mysterious calamity. The combat is straightforward but satisfying. Every weapon feels good and the ability to mix and match them keeps things fresh. It’s approachable in a way that makes you fall into its rhythm quickly but, honestly, the mechanics aren’t what I think about when I remember Bastion. What lingers is the atmosphere. The painterly art style feels almost storybook-like, but it’s tinged with sadness, as if every brushstroke carries the weight of something lost. The world literally builds beneath your feet as you walk, a clever visual metaphor for discovery and reconstr...
Mediocre gameplay, but the art, story, and characters were enough to keep me going to the end
I was impressed by it in 2011, in 2025 in bores me to death.
The game that put SuperGiant Games on my must buy list. Story is excellent and the way its delivered via narration from Logan is brilliant. Highly recommend this title.
The music is so good. As are the story, narration, and visuals. However, I did not enjoy the game part of this game very much, though I did play through it twice. It's hard to really pin down why I wasn't having much fun. The New Game + play-through was definitely more enjoyable, even with some of the challenges turned on. Something about the controls never really clicked for me. The large variety of weapon, skill, and bonus choices are very nice, though, and make it more likely any player will be able to find something that suits them. I meant to play this game a decade ago, when it was new, just never got around to it for some reason. I guess I tried back then, but that not-having-fun thing made me set it aside until recently, when a minor injury got me going through my steam backlog for a bit. I guess I'll throw it a negative review, even though I think it probably would stand up well for many players, even if it is also a little dated now.
A really solid game that aged quite well. Only the perspective can feel a bit awkward in some places with movement/aiming. You can easily find a lot of the designs that make the core of Hades in this game, down to the great music. The idols system was a cool way to have more challenge integrated into gameplay. And I'm sure I will see more of this later on...
This game isn't perfect and definetly shows its age, but it is full of heart, a great OST and some awesome ideas! The enemies can and WILL be frustrating. But it is worth the time and effort to see the story unfold and the world get built before your eyes. Not the greatest game mechanically, but worth your time.
Great game, combat and mechanics are solid, the story is nice, and the narration is silky smooth
This game showcases everything I love about Super Giant Games. A rich story, mild action, quality sound affects and voices. I especially love the narrator's voice in this one. Deep and rusty. The studio started off on a very good foot with their first game.
