By some miracle you have made it to Idra. It will take all your skill to survive and unravel the eldritch mysteries of the Black Priory

SKALD: Against the Black Priory is inspired by roleplaying games of yesteryear, combining modern design and compelling storytelling with authentic 8-bit looks and charms.

Delve into a dark fantasy world, full of deadly creatures, tragic heroes, and lovecraftian horror for an epic retro-style adventure rich in exploration and tactical, turn-based combat.

Do you have what it takes to lead a company of broken heroes from the tainted shores of Idra to the gates of the Black Priory - and beyond?

This game gripped me from the beginning. I love the aesthetic and style of this game. Beautiful pixel art, great bit chip soundtrack, combat that is simple but deep enough to be engaging, a story that gets better and better as you uncover of the games secrets, all of it comes together to make a wonderful experience. There are some bugs that are reported, I for one experienced a game breaking bug once during my playthrough. I had to use the included command console that the devs encourages players to use as many of the bugs are well known and easy to get around if experienced. I only faced one of these bugs and it was only a minor set back, but I still recommend you to save a lot. Playing this at night with all the lights off a warm drink and the silence of the world around me brought me back to a earlier time, playing Ultima and Bauldur's gate as a kid. Its a certain feeling that was only captured by a certain era of video games, SKALD: Against the Black Priory captures that feeling...

The oldest rpg I've played was OG Baldurs Gate, which feels significantly more modern that SKALD. Still I was able to enjoy this game a lot despite not feeling nostalgic. Overall SKALD is great little game, very comfortable to play on Steam Deck. This game also has a great soundtrack.

The aesthetics are beautiful, and the "cutscenes" are fantastic. The combat is fairly straight forward once you get the hang of it. The narrative is where the game shines (combined with the way it is told via gameplay/cutscenes), and I was pleasantly surprised with the final resolution of the plot. Breath of fresh air I might add. The devs have created a remarkable game - well done! The length of this game (23 hours) was perfect for me - just the right amount of time to keep me engaged. No fluff. I played the game with disabled random encounters. Looking forward to any future games by this team. Also, I managed to obtain all achievements - first time doing so after 18 years on Steam :)

This game has been great! Reminds me of an 8-bit demake of Divinity 2.

Solid Fantasy RPG. The only "complaint" is I wanted more, but loved it.

I recommend this game on sale for around $10 CAD. It's worth it for a playthrough and it's a solid RPG. It has good music, dark but engrossing story, decent options and a fun upgrade system. There are some points that are downsides though, so I must list them: -The game is broken for ultrawides, you can get it to work, but it's a juggle with alt-enter fests to prevent screen stretching -There is a quest tied to an acheivement that's broken. They've got a mob that you can fight and kill before triggering the battle "correctly" so it never drops the item you need. This was almost a dealbreaker as it was a quest that as quite long and fun, so it was disappointing to see that at the end, I could never beat this quest unless I was willing to re-play from an older save. -The game doesn't have a 'game over' screen, it end by dropping you into a window telling you how long you took the beat the game, but you can't escape it. You cannot close it, you have to force quit the game. This i...

A lovely, classic RPG. I especially like the style, the atmosphere and the setting. I really like that return to 'dark RPG', reminds me of the old War Craft I & II games and early Magic The Gathering. What I would like to improve: Fights feel sometimes a bit 'clunky', because the battlefield is often very small. I would like to have some longer, more strategic fights. However I am very happy with this game, kudos to the solo developer and the guy who made the soundtrack!

Lovecraft meets AD&D meets oldschool computer RPG with beautiful pixel graphics. Dark and moody atmosphere with a good dash of hopeless horror. What´s there not to love? The playthrough takes just a right amount of time to so that the plot keeps you in its grip. There are some characters and plots that are left open/vague, but only a few. A solid use of your time.
