This is one of those rare Early Access cases where the game is actually fully playable, polished and not ridden with random bugs. I've actually played the demo before and I could continue my progress right away, the whole experience feels really thought out and honed. Love the ironically depressing vibes, finally something fresh. Anyways, if you like games such as Darkest Dungeon (but also card collecting games like Slay the Spire) but want to try something quicker / more 'casual', this is a great game for you. And it already feels like a finished product, I wonder how it'll play when it's fully released.

About the Game
Bonfire is a bite-sized tactical RPG about journey and failure.
Hildie's world has collapsed. She and her group of heroic misfits journey through a desolate world that’s well past saving. Her quest to destroy the Faceless Overlord of the Mournfolk may be hopeless, but she's kinda into lost causes.
Bonfire is a procedurally generated, deeply tactical RPG with a rapid turn-based battle system and heroes who care a little too much. A game of plans that go sideways, crazy builds that somehow work, quick gameplay sessions, and a delightfully gloomy story that binds it all together.
RAPID TACTICS
Bonfire is all about complex strategy emerging from simple rules. The rapid turn-based battle system drops menu navigation in favor of contextual abilities and tactical item use. Each click is a move, each move is significant, and each encounter is a puzzle to solve.
JOURNEY
The gloomy world of Bonfire is procedurally generated. You'll travel to really depressing-sounding places, expand your arsenal of tactical options, meet a cast of rather odd survivors, and struggle to survive yourself. The game is designed for endless play, but its story actually goes somewhere. And yes -- there's even an ending.
EXPERIMENTATION
Making your own builds and party comps is where it's at! Bonfire classes are designed around subtle synergies to work in any possible combination. As your pool of available heroes, abilities and items increases, you'll be able to experiment with more and more interesting setups that don't fall under common RPG archetypes.
FAILURE
Bonfire is difficult. The challenge, however, doesn't come from spiteful RNG coin tosses. While you often have to make the best of a situation, success depends on your setup and tactical flexibility. Each decision is final, and each mistake may be fatal, but runs are bite-sized enough to allow for quick adjustments.
SHOWERS OF BLOOD & COINS
This honestly should be at the top of this list.

Bonfire is a game about the bleak gloominess of the end of the world that manages to have a lot of character and be incredibly charming despite its subject. In terms of gameplay, Bonfire borrows ideas and concepts from rogue-lite genres - like the endlessness of its gameplay loops - without emphasizing the finality of loss and defeat that other games might focus more on. The combat is turn-based. Choose three characters (there are five now, ten planned) to go on an adventure, explore a dungeon, or take a journey to a new land. Each character has three actions - one they can do on themselves, one they can do on an ally, and one they can do against an enemy. You can also equip "rune" abilities that give additional combat options or passive buffs. Whenever you embark on adventure, you can also take a certain amount of the items you have accrued from previous forays. It's worth noting that the developer appears extremely receptive to feedback and genuinely invested in improving an alre...
I have just started playing this game and I know that I will soak into it. Money well spend, good tactical indie game.
Want to recommend it for potential, but can't at this stage. Will check on it again in future. Pros: -Good potential for a strategic rpg game about optimisation and timing -Artwork and sound make a nice atmosphere -Runes and items Cons: -Same party (wiz / warr / priest) each time -Animations are soo slow sometimes, you move from one screen to the next and everyone stops to have an unskippable conversation about what to do next. Also when you get gold, you have to watch each individual piece of gold go from the ground of the monster you just killed, to the top right corner of the screen, again, unskippable. Also heroes have a chat even while you're looking at the map and you can't click on the next map area until they've finished. Nothing in options to skip text or animations either. -Your character loses max health in each battle, meaning you need to finish the battle as soon as poss, meaningi you really only have a narrow way to play each battle, trying to optimise the damage y...
No real plot, story, or interesting characters, so skip this if that's your priority. Dialog is so slow and cumbersome without moving anything forward. ("There's evil out there"/"We have to keep moving," kind of hollow cliches that say nothing) So that leaves us with gameplay... Easy mode is so easy, it feels like I"m just going through the motions rather than playing a game. I kicked it to high difficulty, but the simplistic gameplay doesn't equip the player enough to rise to the challenge of jacked-up enemy hitpoints. It's just brutally hard and I got stuck without food to deploy. The mage guy left my party in disgust when my party kept getting slaughtered. When I should have re-encountered the mage in the wild and had him rejoin, the game was bugged, and instead I encountered the lady pyro... When the lady pyro was already in my party. So there's 2 identical characters (one in my party, one on the right side of the screen) speaking the same identical dialog about reluctantly...
Extremely well executed and cleverly designed indie game! We surely need more of these!
Simple concept, yet surprisingly deep gameplay. Excellent writing. Looking forward to see how it develops in Early Access.
Bonfire Review This game has the potential to be a good game, but it has some SERIOUS issues that ruin the entire experience. I really tried to like this game, and feel like I gave it more than a fair shake. The simple fact is that this game is a very slow grind that rapidly becomes even slower. Your choice of characters is limited to the first three, and it feels like any deviation is severely punishing due to a loss in defense and/or healing. These limitations may be circumvented by grinding enough skill points to add effects to your abilities, but I'm not about to take the time to do that. Harder quests seem to be dependent on your ability to spam heavy damage or instant kill items. All other item types don't have enough impact to take. The mechanic of permanent damage is interesting, but often leads you into positions where you're pretty much doomed to die once your motivation meter becomes too hard to fill to reset your maximum health. With all these complaints, I feel lik...
fun
I really love this game. I like the artstyle and animations. Focusing on one area (combat) and making a fun small game is a good idea. However i still have many expectations as this is not full release. I would like to see more heroes around (easier to reach) and more enemy types. There are definitely some areas to grow. Skills might need customization to make things more interesting. And a small story could help instead of constant dialogues between heroes. Overall very nicely implemented ideas. Fun and simple combat, easy to pick up, engaging and definitely might keep you going for hours. I was thinking whether sending heroes to single missions to pick up loot, could be more active like making some mini games to increase the loot gained or not. Surely there are some areas to grow. Very promising and beautiful indie game. Buy it and support people like this who has potential to make this and better...
