About This Game

Hellish Quart is a local-only, physics-based sword fighting game. Set in 17th century Poland, it features a cinematic story and the most iconic sword fighter archetypes of this period.

With motion-captured fencing techniques and four gamepad buttons representing four attack angles, you'll need to use timing, technique, and speed to defeat your opponents. Choose from a variety of warriors and take part in cinematic story mode, arcade mode, safe sparring, quick fights, survival mode with online leaderboards, or local multiplayer. If you want to hone your sword fighting skills, you can spar with wooden weapons or train in modern HEMA gear. And for the ultimate experience, Hellish Quart also offers an optional VR mode.

Please note that the game is still in development and only supports local multiplayer.

  • physical sword fighting using Active Ragdolls

  • cinematic story

  • online leaderboards

  • realistic historical fencing techniques

  • optional VR mode

Hellish Quart utilizes active ragdolls and real-time physics to get you the ultimate fencing experience. You can attack from four different angles using the four gamepad buttons. Different button combinations enable special attacks and combos. When you are not attacking, your character automatically assumes a defensive stance, blocking your opponent's attacks using the autoguard feature. Proper timing, technique, speed, measure, and wits are all crucial to winning, just like in real-world fencing.

The game is set in the historical 17th-century Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and the character models are based on 3D-scanned reconstructed clothes from that period. The single-player campaign, once completed, will be firmly rooted in the reality of life in the region. You will duel against Zaporozhian Cossacks, Polish Hussars, Tatars, Turkish Janissaries, Swedish Reiters, French Musketeers, and more.

It hurts to give a negative review here, but this isn't an early access title: it is barely a tech demo. This is a very, very early alpha product that is very exciting for people who are into fencing, but will be very negatively received by people who are not. It is frankly irresponsible to even have this on the Steam store in this state. This is a demo only, and even by the standard of demos it is incomplete. All that said, there is real gem in development here if it finishes. People of a particular age will remember an old Playstation series called Bushido Blade, and this has taken some pretty clear inspiration from it. This does lead to very frustrating exchanges where it is not clear why one blow was taken without apparent effect while another ends the round, though. The development team would do well to expose this information better, perhaps in the form of an abstracted paper doll if a traditional health bar is unacceptable. This issue is compounded by the core parrying system ...

A.I. is completely broken! one minute your facing an unstoppable Terminator, the next, you're fighting Rain Man who'd rather walk straight past you and go suck his/her thumb in the corner or something, not kidding, the enemy literally ignored me and walked into the corner, I tapped him to regain his attention and it was like waking a sleepwalker. just went batshit crazy and beat seven colours of snot outta me for my trouble. This is the same A.I. that I'm supposed to leave my Blocking to as there's no block, it's "automatic" that's right.. you leave it the A.I. to block for you.. the same A.I. that is broken and controls the opponent, thanks but no thanks. The instinct to manually block is so strong that it gets me killed just as much as the cheating A.I. which arbitrarily screws you over when it feels like it, YOU NEED MANUAL DIRECTIONAL BLOCKING i.e. press back/away, down back away (diagonal) up away (diagonal), it's not rocket science. Hit detection is nonsense, hit an opponent ...

Bushido Blade is one of my all-time favorite PS1 games, so I'm more than excited for what could be a much anticipated, worthy spiritual successor. Personally, no other game has come as close to scratching that itch as this has. There is so much potential here and I love the Story Mode addition! With the right improvements this could be what I've waited years for. P.S. This is what the combat in KCD should have been!

After transitioning from Half Sword to this game - Hellish Quart wipes the floor with Half Sword! Though some people might like the rubber-bandy, fast paced, and sometimes comical parts of Half Sword, I would rather play a game that takes itself seriously. I don't want this to be a compare and contrast of Half Sword and Hellish Quart, so I'll talk about some parts that make this game enjoyable; at least for me. Firstly, this game's realism is outstanding! From the way characters drop when wounded or injured, to the variety of techniques included within the move-sets of characters (that real HEMA experts use btw!), this game is amazing. Second, what I also love about this game is how much VARIATION this game holds. Several maps, dozens of characters each with their own backstories and traits, basically the types of characters you can play. From Turkish jannisary, to a Scottish Traveler, to bandits, drunkards, and straight-up duelists. Lastly, the different game-modes you can play are ne...

It's software, and real life Olympic foil fencing even suffers from incorrect point scoring sometimes despite also using electronics to tell as our eyes just aren't fast enough, but Hellish Quart does the best a video game can do to give you the true historical experience of dueling and competitive sparring and if you think you might enjoy it, I promise you will. Does it have flaws? Yes, but nothing like AAA games. The bugs are few and far between and the dev is obsessively updating the game sometimes twice a day even. My only complaint is that there's too many sabre characters. This game got me into HEMA. I main rapier. I wish it had more rapier users. Simple as. The devs are Polish however, and as such I doubt rapier will get much attention as the Poles tend to only really focus on sabre and maybe longsword. But that doesn't take away from the game's quality, it's just an angle it doesn't develop. If you think you'll like the game, get it. No, I haven't put much time into playing...

Hellish Quart is a distinctive and ambitious fighting game developed by Kubold that seeks to revive and reimagine the art of classical European swordplay. Departing from the over-the-top combos and fantastical moves typical of many fighting games, Hellish Quart opts for a slower, more deliberate pace that emphasizes realistic fencing techniques and physics-based combat. This approach creates a deeply immersive and strategic experience that appeals not only to fighting game enthusiasts but also to history buffs and fans of martial arts simulation. The game’s visual style is one of its most immediately striking features. Utilizing hand-painted character models and fluid animations captured through motion capture, Hellish Quart presents sword fighting in a way that feels both authentic and artistically beautiful. The character designs reflect historical accuracy, showcasing a variety of European warriors and duelists from the 17th and 18th centuries, each equipped with period-appropria...

I spend money on the game, just to have to buy it again when it gets fully released? I will never give this publisher or studio another dollar.

Never once have I played a such a viscerally realistic and engaging sword fighting game. Fighter's are mocapped, and use historically accurate form for their chosen weapon. Because one cut can and likely will end the fight, the stakes feel incredibly high. I have a hundred hours not cause there's some expansive story (which is being worked on, but unavailable during my playtime thus far) it's because the physics are so good, and the fights feel so intense, that you just want to keep coming back. I wanted to see everyone's fighting style, and fight well enough to be able see and utilize all of their custom execution animations. Beating your record in survival mode is a new type of high, and getting cut down just beforehand is a new type of anger. Luckily, this game gives you the opportunity to sever hands and heads, given the right cut. I'll put it to you like this - If Mortal Kombat is the Call of Duty of fighting games, Hellish Quart is the Arma. Highly recommend, this game is absolu...
